Who Will Die First when SHTF

Something about her really rubs me the wrong way. She seems like she thinks she knows more than she really does and is living on false information. I like how she talks about, "Oh, I worked with drug addicts for two years, one or two rounds of 9 MM won't stop them," and then goes on to talk about, "Oh, these people aren't fire arm proficient...they only go to the range every once in a while...". :jerkit:

Then on top of that there's just far too much generalization wrapped up in common sense. Of course people that aren't mobile aren't going to make it, but then she goes on to talk about who she thinks will and won't be mobile. I'll tell you guys right now that people are amazing; I've got a friend who is 63 years old with multiple sclerosis that just hiked 37 miles through rugged mountain terrain over the weekend. I'm pretty sure if I asked this woman what her thoughts on the odds of a disabled senior citizen making it, she would never even consider something like this.

Anyway, not that I have a problem with people generalizing, I've just seen enough to know that you shouldn't have your mind made up about things. When the shit hits the fan, I think the people the least likely to survive will be those too wrapped up in their own ideas of what's going to happen to learn and adapt.

I mean, I doubt she'll really be as cut out for it as she thinks she is, talking about "looting" as if she really thinks she'll retain the same values concerning theft in that type of world. Do people even consider the fact that, in a SHTF world that any resources you can find probably belonged to someone before, and could serve someone other than yourself. "Looting" and "stealing are all synonymous with "scavenging" in this situation--the euphemistic zeal society has put on the words quickly disintegrates along with society. The idea of taking advantage of someone else not being the right thing to do just shows she has no idea how it's like to live with your own survival being paramount.

Personally, if I had to typify her, I'd say she was the bleeding heart that tries too hard to prepare for life because they're uncomfortable not being in control. I mean, the idea of her talking about the "yuppies" not being able to admit that they were wrong could just as easily apply to her, and I seriously doubt she's in any better of a position to admit she's wrong. Simply put, when her ideals and morals are jeopardized, so will her survival be jeopardized, because she's not willing to separate the two and probably doesn't understand the need to.

Being assertive with experience is legitimate.
Being assertive without any background is just being a fraud.
The way she talks she probably hasn't any and is simply living her own fantasy. Actually it's not even her own since all she's doing is singing a very conventional gospel.

The fact that some random nurse have figured out the ten next potential crisis should rise some alarm.

Instead of some hallucinated delirium maybe one would be better off studying some countries where shit has actually been hitting the fan for some time like various parts of Africa, Bosnia, Iraq... You'll see those who die are not necessarly the ones one who have guessed.

I don't see the point you're trying to make. Most of Afrca, Iraq and Bosnia have been knee deep for generations. Why not look at the recent disasters and trouble in first world contries first.
This article is beyond retarded. Its only purpose is to ridicule preppers and self sufficient folks by lumping them with the tin-foil hat and bomb shelter survivalist crowd.

To be fair, according to John Keegan's Face of Battle, only about 10% of the military population is effective at pulling the trigger; and, that is something that seems to hold true for all cultures, for most of recorded history.

It's a good read:

Im in the military and that 10 % that did is probably in combat arms specifically the Infantry. When I was in Afghanistan we had very few that weren't effective at pulling the trigger. Training is different today than it was 30 years ago or 5years ago for that matter.

Probably the priority for a SHTF is to be in decent shape, becasue it doesnt matter how high speed and well thought out your BOB is if you cant carry it 2 miles without having to stop for a smoke break than you might as well sit in your house and eat big macs (there won't be big macs in SHTF)

And another thing, is the ability to make something out of nothing and to be a divergent thinker, and thinking outside the box, preplanning and stuff like that. Having this mindset can help you out even if you arent the best trained or in the best shape, a little common sense goes a long way.

And just remember it doesnt matter how much you stock pile, if you dont stockpile any kind of defense the next door neighbor that stockpiled nothing can take it all with one well aimed bullet.

I dont know ,pretty hard pin down this sort of thing.I have alway thought that the "country folk " would have a better chance based on fresh water availability, agriculture /livestock resources, and a generally better disposition towards their neighbor/fellow man. They also are more of the hunter/fisherman variety.I kinda always thought the major metro areas would be complete and total chaos in a shtf situation.I have lived in both ,western N.C. and the Dallas /Ft.Worth metroplex. I know which one I would choose.

Less traffic in the event of evac, less likely to catch human borne illnesses due to less proximity to less people. More resources per person, more wilderness based skills when it comes to obtaining and maintaining tools and other resources like food and water. I can't think of anything an urban area would offer more of beneficially, other than maybe initial access to preserved food...

Is she right about who will die first? Probably. Who will die second? Probably me. Why? I don't believe in the every man fend for himself, grab a gun and head to the woods solution. I will stay to help if possible. At least that is what I hope I would do. I care too much about my neighbors to feel much self respect if I do otherwise.

"I will go with you, will help you all I can, will work with you, will rest with you, will suffer with you, and if necessary I will die with you. May God have mercy bless and preserve us" -Levi Savage

Thats a noble and brave outlook. I would do what I could for my fellow man so long as it did not threaten the safety of my family .Period . My #1 mission would be to protect and insure the survival of my wife and 5 year old daughter and if that meant takin you out and roasting your quadricep on a spit then thats the way it would be.I believe , in the scenario we are discussing, that your will to improvise ,adapt ,and overcome will be what separates the living from the dead.

Isn't funny how no one will cop to the urge to run to the first gun store, BASS Pro, Costco or Sears and steal everything they need but couldn't afford in a civilized setting?

I for one have a good stockpile of survivalist goodies but don't think for a minute I wouldn't go a 1/2 mile down the road with my neighbors in tow and commandeer the local Chevron/High Class Booze Mart for whatever we didn't have at the beginning. But then again the owner is a friend so it's been discussed over poker and beers.:D;)

Here in the southland, the most likely disaster will be a major earthquake. Freeway bridges will be down along with live powerlines, so any notion of "bugging out" is ridiculous. If you are away from home, darn well better be ready to live out of your vehicle for at least a few days! Each of the family vehicles, is stocked accordingly....and that includes dealing with social unrest that will be inevitable.

The big thing here will be finding safe water. There is a year round spring fed water source in the hills a few miles away, that can be reached on dirt roads. Every member of the family has an ATV, so we would just ride up there to fetch water every couple days....so no sense at all in leaving home. Luckily, the weather is mild here year round so nobody is going to freeze to death, and we live at the foot of a large mountain range that gets a good amount of snow, so there will always be an ample supply of water.

Also, have dual-sport bikes (street legal dirt bikes), so we will also be able to get around more freely using very little fuel and check on friends and family, without using the main thoroughfares.

Our E&E plan takes us down a wide road that has an RV lot, Excavation Business, grocery stores, propane distributors, a gun shop, clothing store, and a backcountry backpacking store. We've thought this out. Living out of a tent or hammock is fine, but I plan to be fortified, in an RV, running %50 watch, cooking over propane, and using bull dozers to build blockades. With the area and resources, we could make a nice little area for ourselves until all the BS calms down, then, come back and rebuild. Helping your fellow man is noble, but in my book, me and mine come first, others second. You have to be alive to rebuild. Dying while trying to maintain order in a chaotic sitiuation, won't help the present situation or the future.

Large masses of scared, dying, and starving people is what SHTF is all about in my book. The "mob" doesn't think, or rationalize. They react, often times too much so. The person is smart, the mob is not. Get large groups together and they react, "He's got food", mob attacks, even knowing there's not enough food to feed them all. People scare me, that's why I live with my back to the mountains. Everyone will have to make a decision if the time ever comes, but I don't think sticking your head in the sand and saying it won't come is good thought paradigm.

I like "survival" stuff, practicing my outdoor skills, minimal backpacking, thinking outside the box to solve a problem. I don't do it because I think someday the world's gonna end, its fun for me. But, thinking ahead to potential problems and coming up with a solution now, might just save the life of someone I love.

Sorry for the wall of text, I'll go back to the short stuff after this.

So...speaking of survival and SHTF, did anybody else catch the season premiere of the Walking Dead on AMC? Awesome show!

Well I don't think I'm qalled to predict who will die first, but I do know it's going to suck for the pore young people with young children like me, I'm 23 I have a 4yo boy and a 7yo girl. We have vary little stocked up because we still have to train and we still have to eat. And wen times get tough we have to brake into the stores of food. We have a couple places to go if shtf but traveling with small children is going to be very difficult. We don't know many people here and it's kinda hard to bring up this kind of thing with people you don't know very well, even more so wen you live in a military town. Because unfortunately some will think you have bad intentions for our country, or they think your crazy. Another problem with living in a military town is that it's likely to be under Marshall law, and they will be taking our sh!t. But known of us will ever know until it happens.

Make more friends with like minded people, you'd be surprised how many people not in the middle to upper middle class think the same way you do.

Take a look at this:

Recon Ranger-your screwed on that side of the hill bro, too many people, too little resources, come to the darkside, for a BBQ!

She made a big deal about being "mobile":

Think long and hard about having alternate economical forms of transportation! Major thoroughfares will be blocked or clogged with traffic, but we can get most anywhere we want to go, using backcountry dirt roads! We are into off-road anyway, so it is just natural to turn to dirt bikes and ATV's for transportation when fuel is scarce. How does 70+ mpg go anywhere transportation sound? For longer term if one had to go on "the road", a utility ATV can carry all the gear and extra fuel one would need for a major expedition. Can pull a small trailer as well.
