Who would be up for a winter gathering in Western North Carolina?

Yeah, that would be a good time come to think of it. Most of the places would be good during then too, so don't restrict it to Linville just cause lil o me said it. Ashley says she may try to come and bring some of her friends.

It's a nice setting and offers us the opportunity to hike into other great areas.

We can cover things like fire basics - starting fires in cold weather/wet environments, firebeds, shelter in winter, making cordage and using that to make snoeshoes...just some ideas to start.

Sounds good. At first I was concerned because pretty sure Linville is a Wilderness Area, and you can't have fires in Middle Prong and Shining Rock Wildernesses, but it looks like they are OK in Linville.

Anyone else have ideas for topics to cover?

Well, we should cover hypothermia, its effects, how to counter it, how to treat it, and same for frostbite. Principles of heat loss/gain, and ways to use that knowledge to meet your needs, signaling in bad weather, navigation, and I'd love to work on tracking exercises, even team tracking for SAR/LEO purposes.

Well, I have EMT class on thursday nights, but I can try to make it friday and saturday.

Anyone can come for as long or as little of the time as they like. It's a gathering, for fellowship and friendship through skills practice and socializing. There are no requirements except that you show up with a good attitude and be prepared to have fun and maybe be challenged. You can do any of the seminars and/or skills you want, or sit out anything you want. It is fully up to you!

I'm going to plant the seed and see if I can get a sitter at some point for a weekend or possibly get my wife to schedule off one of those weekends.

It sounds like there will be a lot of useful information to be had at this gathering.

Cool. We may have a very special guest who is expert at flintnapping and may teach us a trick or two as well. We'll see if his schedule allows!

Im doing a trip in Arkansas 2 weeks before this so I should be acclimated to the cold. Isnt this near where they filmed Last of the Mohicans? I think I will go.

That would be cool Brian. I gathered up the stuff to do basic flintknapping a couple of years ago, and quickly realized I had no clue what I was doing. Some instruction would be nice!

Also, gratuitous bump for those who didn't see this the first time around. :D I'm the official thread-bumper.

Wow - very cool of you to set this up Brian.
Wish so much I could join, but I'm burning all my vacation in heading down over Christmas and New Years.

I'll be in Leicester/Fairview from the 22nd through the 4th though :-)

All the best,

sp

BTTT. I can do a NATURAL formation shelter thing there. They are all over the place. Rock outcroppings, caves, hollow trees.

There is also trout in the linville river.

I could ask a few friends in the area to see if they want to come up as special guests as well. What are the dates again?
