I asked this on an other thread but no one has answered it. Just thinking of how bad they smell when they spray, and everytime I have seen one dead/killed one they sprayed. I think that it would be impossible to skin one with out the meat stinking:barf: . So, who out there would eat one in a survival situation? For example it is the only thing you have caught in a trap and you are very, very hungry. Who would try to skin and eat it?

Of course, I would eat a skunk in a survival situation. It would be ridiculous to choose to die, rather than eat a skunk. I must say, though, it is hard to imagine a realistic situation where my choice is either to eat a skunk or die.

Im not saying eat it or die. I was wondering more along the lines of its all you have caught so far, do you eat it or pass and hope for better luck next time?

Why not eat a skunk? It's just like a big squirrel or a small racoon. But I'd have to make sure it hadn't leaked or sprayed before I killed it. I think that a soiled skunk would be totally inedible, no matter how close to death you were. They just had a newspaper article about a guy who's had a skunk spraying his apartment wall for months. Now he has nosebleeds.

my dad used to have one as a pet in colledge , he said there not bad little pets if you get them de-scented [you can buy them that way]. they have little glands/firing ports:D around the base of their tail area , if you hit one in the head clean and dont piss it off i think it would be fine to eat . they are actually more cat like than marsupial like, if you get close enough to a pet one you will realize this . funny little critter.you might be able to find one at one of the larger pet shops and then you could pick up one of the little guys and ask the sales person to show you where the firing ports are . just dont ask if there re edible:D

You'll find that if you pinch your nose closed, your sense of taste gets calmed-down quite a bit. Cooked carrots taste OK if my nose is held closed. ;)

1930's. A Fall River whaling vessel had a skunk on board as a ratter. When they wrecked, they ended up eating the skunk. I doubt that it had been descented.

History says if people are hungry enough, they eat worms, grubs - and people.

There are many other critters aside from the skunk with musk glands, and they eat just fine. If you are cautious with the cleaning, skunk are no different.

Curious, wade, what makes you think skunk's meat would smell or in any way be permeated with his musk?

i always save the glands till the skunk is cooked, then the juice can be sprinkled over the meat as a seasoning.

remember skunk is a very lean meat (like rabbit) and you can actually get protein poisoning if eaten to long with out the addition of fat to your diet.
