great contest.
great idea.
my first thought was an 11 or a 14 for my son. but who am i kidding, i already have his knive(s) all lined up for the next 150 years. 'this one is for the boy, honey. later, when he's ready for it. yeah, that's it. for the boy.'
then i actually thought about who i know that needs a good knife and doesn't have one, b/c it's a great thought. who needs a knife? who do i know that would use and appreciate one, but doesn't already have/get knives? my friend Brian. Cap'n, he's over by you, lives in Portland. I'm east-side of WA.
Best friend from college. Even then, made me laugh all the time - here's him 20 years ago refusing to take one of our roommates who wanted to drunk-wrestle seriously.
Post-school, life is busy. We don't see each other as much as we should. But about 10 years ago, i got him hooked on fly-fishing and we spend a week fishing and mountain biking up in Canada each year now. It's one of my favorite weeks of the year. We go way back in the woods, catch some monsters, bike some great singletrack.
and he still makes me laugh every day we hang out together, without even trying. just fishing.
So we go WAY backcountry to get into that good fishing. He's in the upper right here. not a good place to slip and fall, but beautiful place to catch a cutt.
He kayaks (built his own wooden sea kayak a couple yrs ago). he camps. he spent 3 weeks in machu picchu last year as a present to himself (not married, no kids). he goes out backcountry by himself all the time. here's a pic he took last summer when he spent a couple days by himself up in the goat rock wilderness - his solo tent on the left edge of pic.
AND THE MAN STILL USES A FREAKING MULTI-TOOL. That's
it. For the last 15+ years of being outside.
So I think Bri's a perfect candidate for a 16. He always borrows my knife when we're camping and it's out - easier to clean, easier to use than his little knife on his multi-tool. So he'd use one for sure. But I don't think he'd carry a bigger blade like a 2 (i know that's not big to us, but it is to non-knife folks) - With a lifetime of multi-tool usage, a 16 would be all he'd need. But he'd use it. He'd drop a 16 in his pack when he heads out. And just in case, it would be there for him.
As a bonus, it would probably also get him started down this expensive steel road we're all on. Beckers have a way of doing that.
So that's who i know that should get a Becker. A good, not-too-big knife to use backcountry, b/c he's always backcountry, and he doesn't already do knives like we do.
Thanks for giving me something good to think about, can't believe i didn't see this thread earlier. again, great idea.
oh yeah. Me. Me, i want to try a 5. see what the fuss is all about. never even held one before, and i have most of the other Beckers already.
Here's us. someone should photoshop a 5 into my hand and a 16 into his
