Whole in sak awl?

can anyone tell me what that little whole is for in the awl of the saks?

I believe it's for sewing. You poke the awl through two layers of material, then thread a string through the hole, and pull the awl back through the material, taking the thread or string with it. Kinda like a "reverse needle."

At least, that's what I THINK it's for. My Vic Farmer doesn't have a hole.

i've used that awl to stich up a sail in the past.

it's also kinda handy for cleaning out a horses hooves. just don't dig it in.
