I second the knifekits.com suggestion. I have built a Delta 5 spearpoint fixed blade, a fixed blade skinner, and a folder (DDR3) from them, and I am currently working on a wonderful fixed tanto they offer. All more or less purchased as kits, and in every case well worth what I paid for them. In my experience, they are generous with the spare parts (a few extra bolster pins here, some additional hidden fasteners there), and they have excellent customer service. They ship items to me in Canada faster than most Canadian online dealers.
For a first time kit, I would check out one of their recent fixed blades. You'll need a screwdriver, sandpaper, a coping saw, some epoxy, and a dremel to assemble the kit, and you won't be disappointed with the quality of the blade.
Enjoy, but be warned - once you start down the path of kit making, you'll soon find yourself surrounded by blade blanks, sawdust, and spare handle scales ...
