Here in rural Alaska the mail carrier is not required to come to the door. That is why I now have a PO box. We don't want to stress those federal workers too much ya know.

I've not had problems with priority mail, but the regular mail is for the birds. I had ordered a replacement part from Sure Fire for one of my lights and after 2 weeks, it never showed. They sent it out regular mail (not priority) and who knows where it is now. Luckily, they sent out another part (by regular mail again) and it got here on 4/6. Postmarked 4/3 and it came all the way from California. I'm also waiting for some new thumb studs from Darrel Ralph. He said he sent them end of last week....still not here yet. Add to this, over the years I've had stuff "missing" in transit from merchandise to magazines. And now they are talking about cutting out Saturday deliveries?? Don't even get me started on those USPS bastids

From now on, I'm going to ship more stuff out FedEx or UPS whenever I can.

It's always the stuff you want that gets lost or mangled in the mail (magazines), while the stuff you wish would get lost doesn't (bills)

I have one or two occasions where they don't bother knocking. I watched one time when the carrier came to the door, looked around the patio and then left. I walked out and caught bher at the next building. She looked me with some surprise and then said "I've got a package that requires a signature." I was going to say something, but I figured this wasn't a regular occurence and if I mentioned it, it might become a problem.

why aren't more people happy?

I had packages soaking in the rain left at the front doors many times. I had a package that took seven days instead of three days to be delivered. The Postal Service is clueless on why they are losing money. They probably would not survive if they had to operate like a commercial business.

I have not had any problems with Priority mail, have had provlems with the idiot carriers though! Especially when we have a sub. Now FedEx and UPS are different stories, will not use them UNLESS there is no other recourse. Don't get me started

Oh I do have ONE complaint ;-) Had a mag come, now there was a HOT semi-naked girl on front (not an x-rated mag) GEAR I think. When it got to my box, it was in such bad shape it was very obvious that more than 1 postal worker had a good perusal of my 'zine before it got to me. Bastids!

Yeah, I can relate. I've just had 2 occurances of the USPS's unwillingness to deliver packages. One was a registered letter that required a signature. My son was home and the carrier never attempted to deliver the letter, just left "the slip" in the mailbox. The second was after winning a knife on KnifeForums, I had it shipped to my place of work. The lazy postman, not wanting to get out of the mail truck, just left "the slip" in the mailbox. It seems that all of the package/letter delivery companies are slacking. What ever happened to customer service?

I've not had a problem with Post Office delivery of packages.

However, I've heard moans and groans about UPS, USPS, and FedEx.

I honestly think that not one of the 3 is perfect.

I may be having problems with Priority Mail, or else someone I bought from on Ebay is not being fully honest. Will report back when and if my book is received and I can examine the postmark.

If you are going to ship priority mail I suggest using the 35 cent green delivery confirmation stickers. They are free at the post office and you can track the dates and times from start to delivery. With these you know if the package made it and you can print out the confirmation if needed.

I use USPS Priority Mail, with Delivery Confirmation quite often, and I have NEVER had a problem with their service. I have received a package clear from New York in 2 DAYS! (I'm in Washington State).

The postman can't come to my house because I don't have an address! I live in a very rural area on a mountain. I LOVE the postal service and one reason is my post office is so small, there's hardly ever anybody in it. Like Dann, I've sent dozens and dozens of packages 3 Day Priority Mail and have never had a SINGLE problem. Now just don't ask me about UPS. That's another whole DIFFERENT story.

We used to have a carrier who used her cell phone to call the house when she hit our mile to see if anyone was home to sign for the insured ones. The new guy drives up to the house and honks. One more attaboy for our particular post office, our postmaster went to the PO Christmas Day to make sure that if anyone had packages from afar that they could get them.
On the other side, I once had a priority package take 8 days to go from here to California.
Overall, I can't really complain about the service I get.

I think glockman's talking about my package! How's that KFF doing these days?

Anyway, for the record, the Post Office does have to operate like a normal business. They get no free rides from Uncle Sam. Who knew?

I have had pretty good luck with the USPS and Priority Mail. A couple of mangled magazine covers, but out of 3 per months for several years, not too bad. I have also had the old "Oh well there's nobody in the yard to sign for this package so I'll just quietly leave my note and run". One day I was home myself and caught the mailman 3 yards down. That didn't happen again, after the embarrassment. I have also found that being friendly to your mail carrier works wonders. My parents used to give the mail carrier a small Xmas gift when I was growing up. Excellent service.

UPS on the other hand has not been good. They are also guilty of not trying to get a signature and just leaving a slip for me to go pick it up. I can live with that though. What I really hate is their habit of leaving "signature required" packages on the doorstep. The worst thing they've done is deliver packages to completely different addresses than mine. Not the neighbor, but people a couple of blocks away. Luckily they logged in the addresses that they did deliver them to, and I was able to get them, after quite a bit of frustration and hassle.

As long as USPS Priority Mail is getting them to the correct address and intact, I'm going to stick with them.

I've never had any problems with Priority Mail. In fact, one day our post-mistress switched packages (I got vitamins instead of a Spyderco), and didn't realize it until she got halfway across town and had to deliver the other one. She drove all the way back, apologized, and switched boxes, instead of letting the customer sort things out as seems to happen all to often with other companies.

You guys need more experience. Last month we shipped about 1800 orders. 150 or so of them were by priority mail, the rest by UPS. UPS lost one and priority mail lost 4. That's a typical month, by the way. We get reimbursed for the one UPS lost, we pay for the 4 the postal service lost. Last month was typical. We've already put a $70 ceiling on priority mail shipments. Over that we refuse the order. It's just too risky to entrust any more to the postal service since it is impossible at worst or impractical at best to make an insurance claim. I wish it were better but it seems to be getting worse. Take care.

Fred,
I think you got good service from UPS simply because you (Knife Outlet) are a business. UPS does not generally act so kindly to individuals trying to use their services. From their actions (up to searching all packages from individuals now) they have shown that they really don't value the business of the average guy/gal.

I have constant problems with usps.
No wonder folks go postal!

They dont come to the door BUT THEY SAY THEY DID! My Dobie's love to bite their tires (evil grin)

They (as you can see above) deliver LATE and I have always got ripped mail and returned mail with the guts laying in an envelope.

Ups has lost one package in the last 6 months. They found it right away.
A few have been late, I can live with that.

FED X owes me 1000.00 . They dont pay there insurance . AND they wont refund the false insurance that they collect that is non collectable if a product is lost. They ran over a 1500.00 folder a few years back . But it wasnt there falt! The FED X truck did it!
I only use them if the client is paying and understands that there is NO insurance on the product.
UPS pay all there claims (At least on this end so far). Its A PITA to go through the paper work ect but at least they pay.
UPS has a crappy account service and refund service. Kinda like the phone company now days

A friend of mine has a newer service from airborn. I may give it try. Overnight for 6.50 anywhere in the US. You have to pre-buy the service.
