I new here, but figured it can't hurt to ask.

I'm a little torn, I just got an "official" offer as an intern with a company that I really want to work with...but they've positioned me in California!!?? Of, all the places that have projects that is the last place I wanted to end up. I have a month to accept. (I don't intend on keeping them waiting THAT long.)
If it was for the summer I'd say no big deal...but this is full 6 months. It's pay is minimal...but they provide housing/utilities and moving costs both ways. So it's still a pretty good deal.
Can an outdoorsy "Hick" make, or bear it, in California? I know it's not all Hollywood and L.A. but still? Best I can tell I'll likely end up somewhere mid-state around the Tracy/Modesto area or the San Diego area.

I'm consoling myself with the fact that I've never been west of Kansas City and Yosemite and the Pacific will both be within weekend-drive distance.

In Calif. having the housing and utilities paid for is half the battle.

Both places you speak of are nice places as far as Cali goes but I would prefer the Tracy/Modesto over San Diego. I was raised in LA and will never go back. There actually is some really nice outdoorsy stuff to do up there.

There's a huge amount of spectacular wilderness in California. If you can ignore the people, their politics, and their laws, there's plenty to enjoy, do and see in California, including around the areas you mentioned.

Totally agree: yosemite, kings canyon, redwood and sequoia national parks, Sierra Nevadas, and even Napa valley are all cool!

If it gets your foot in the door with a company you want to work for, do it. You can hang by your thumbs for six months! :D

If it's gonna be good experience, then take it. Six months isn't that long. It's an investment in your career. Sometimes, in life in general, you have to endure some short-term pain to achieve a long-term gain.

I'm born and raised California. San Diego may be a bit much for ya;), but Tracy/Modesto....damn you'll be up to your neck in hicks!! I mean that in a good way, too. You should go for it, even if it's just to check out another part of the country. The opportunity is there and it's just one more place you can say you've spent time in. Helps to round out the 'ol personality.

Cheers,
jon:)

I'd take Tracy/Modesto, and get up into the Sierras at every opportunity. Most of what they feed you in the media about California is a distortion of the truth, or only applies to big city areas. There is a LOT of country in California.

Six months in CA will expand your perspective. I say do it.

I'll have to agree with all the previous posters: plenty of hicks up in the Modesto region you're speaking of. Honestly, this is the thing about California: it has just about EVERYTHING. Rich snobby liberal elite? Check. Rich snobby conservatives? Check. Movie stars? Beach bums? Thugs? Illegal Immigrants? Intellectuals? Hicks? Survivalists? Hippies? Burn-outs? Artists? Working men? Minutemen? Gays? Lesbians? Christian right? Earth Liberation Front? Cults? There is a region for ANY interest group in california. Desert, city, forest, mountains, snow, beach, plains, etc, just about every kind of terrain, and just about any group of people. Modesto is what you're looking for, but if you need something else, California basically has it too. Rich, poor, paranoid, gun-grabbing, gun-loving- it's a big state, and doesn't suffer from lack of diversity.

First off , not everyone who dwells in the Republik drives on the 'left' if ya know what I mean.

I too would recommend Modesto over SD , if you are not big on going to the beach and dealing with massive amounts of people , the costs are also far less up in Mod.

I live about 1.5 hours south of Modesto , its not too bad here this time of year , nice and cool/cold at night , lots of fog , some frost.
The only drawbacks I can think of is Modesto area there is not much to do if you are into nightlife/party time , sort of stuff , I mean it's no LA.
But it is quieter , despite no shortage of gang types , which are everywhere here in the mid to big cities.
There is plenty of hunting in that area, duck , pheasant , quail , deer , etc.
Look around you'll see plenty of NRA and various "hick" stickers on trucks , lol , there';s all manner of people here. :D

Pack your bags and go. Six months is not a long time and even if you don't like it there, you will at least know that you don't like it.

Go for it. Living in new places with an open mind can be one of the best experiences you will ever have. Just remember the part about an open mind.

Glad to hear this guys...I know six months is only six months. I also realize our media does a wonderful job of...well...doing a bad a job.

I appreciate it.

There's lots of parts of San Diego that have that "Booney" feel to them. The rule of thumb is that the closer you live to the beach, the less "Booney", although there are parts of Imperial Beach that still qualify as "booney" too.

Between Tracy and Modesto? Modesto will feel more like the Midwest.

Just remember, you're a visitor here until you experience an earthquake of magnitude 6 or better. Then we make you an honorary native. (It's kind of like Robert Service's "Ballad of the Iceworm Cocktail".)
