Who's in or been in Cali?

If it's only for six months, do it. You'll learn why us Cali expatriates hate it so much.

Modesto sucks, BTW. San Diego has the most perfect weather of any place in the U.S.
And San Diego County is very conservative. Too bad it's in CA. The cost of living in CA is very high, so take that into consideration.

I lived in CA about 47 years too long.
 
If you end up in Modesto or Tracy ($$ to live in Tracy rent wise) Just look east to the Sierra mountains. Yosemite National park and the foothills. You could spend a life time exploring, hunting, fishing, camping, backpacking... you get the idea. Then there's San Francisco, kinda like Disneyland, only it's a whole city. But weird.
 
I'd take San Diego over Tracy/Modesto any day. I grew up in San Diego and there's a lot to do there, beautiful scenery. It's worth a shot for 6 months for sure. And if you want anything you can't find in San Diego, it's an hour or so drive to the mountains, or L.A., depending on what you're looking for.

The Tracy/Modesto area is pretty damn boring.

You'll find all kinds of people in California, including whatever you're looking for, and a whole lot more you never would have expected to see anywhere.
