Yeah, I have one of those on my everyday key ring w/ electrical tape around it. Why the tape? Did you ever catch one of the tip of the blades under your nail really good? OUCH. Other than that, they are the best thing to have in a pinch. I think it would save you from taking along a extra knife or multitool for the can opener.

I use a rubber o-ring its easier to put on and off

I have a Canadian P-38 which is a bit longer. Has anyone ever made a high tech version ,of stainless steel ?? I need one to go with my WWII stainless steel canteen .

mette, i'm not sure if they make one in stainless. i have one made in shelby ohio. i have several others stashed and if one is stainless i'll send it to you.

A few of us old timers have used P-38s for decades. I guess it's handy to have, maybe stashed in your billfold, if you don't have better tools. But a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife (an appropriate model) is infinitely more useful. If you like a P-38 then you really should try the newer and somewhat larger P-51 that is available now. Even before I began carrying my Victorinox Farmer long ago I always carried a pocketknife that was capable of opening cans. That little task does not require a dedicated can opener if you know how to go about it. A P-38 is better than your fingernails, but I don't get excited about one any more.

I got the large version from County Comm recently and like it a lot!

SKAMMER - "Never carried one never plan to. A simple sak does 10 times more."

I'm with Skammer. My ancient Case four bladed Boy Scout knife (a "simple SAK") works just fine for all those duties listed. Also has more leverage than a P-38.

I love them. I agree that saks do more, but a P38 is on my keychain, and a sak isn't. I can easily get a P38 through airline security, even during the height of 9/11 tensions, no problem. Plus, I like backup.

I love SAKs but unless you are into opening A LOT of cans with the SAK-supplied can opener, a P-38 is like a buzz-saw (it's just so much easier to use) and it's the best micro-knife-blade-size can opener I have ever used. The thing is just this tiny little thing, I cannot see how anyone would think it a burden to carry.

I agree that the p38 opens cans easier than a SAK can opener.
