Why a habaki?

I visited Keith's sword polishing site and found it more than interesting.

I have some questions specifically about hand polishing, as opposed to machine polishing.
I could post them here, or...?

dragging this thread up out of the depths....

I've come out of retirement to do some new knives. All are toggle-tang takedown style, which means they are a modified form of Japanese tang and use the habaki. My latest kick is making all the furniture out of titanium... including the habaki. Here are some pics of some recent pieces with titanium furnishings, some anodized, some polished.
