My take on this is that it's still rude as hell. At a picnic when you've got a hunk of salami to slice up? sure.

At a starred restaurant with a chunk of filet? Insulting to the chef regarding his ability to cook, and insulting to the owner of the place regarding their flatware.

I disagree, I have encountered several high end restaurants (steak houses and other types) where their flatware was awful, especially the "steak knives". As far as "insulting" the chef etc. I really don't care, if that offends them then they should have purchased better utensils in the first place and their ability to cook obviously IS lacking in some regards.

My choice to discreetly use my knife around others has nothing to do with what they think of me. It is about me respecting the boundaries of my fellow man and realizing that just because i have a right to do something doesnt mean i will always do it just to be that guy. My choices are influenced by my beliefs not what others think of me. And my belief is that i have a right to use my knife. But i also believe others should not have to believe what i believe and as a courtesy i use discretion. Just like i wont use foul language in front of someones children and i wont hit on some dudes wife (knowingly).

Thank you for proving my point. You're equating using a knife to swearing at kids and hitting on married women. You have been brainwashed into thinking that there's something wrong with using a knife, which is why you feel the need to hide it. Do you believe that it's OK to swear at kids and hit on married women as long as you're doing it discretely?

The only place I've ever been negatively judged for cutting food with my own knife is...right here on Bladeforums! :D

Awesome point. I'm not sure if this or Mecha's was the most on point post of the thread so far. A big +1 to both, though.

I'm just sitting here wondering what kind of life people lead that they feel safe to use an EDC on or even around food. I was opening bags of animal poop for fertilizer a couple days ago and got antifreeze all over it a few days before that. Nothing wrong with a life style where someone doesn't do them things but that's what an EDC is intended to be. If I buy food and my kitchen knives are so crappy I can't prep it with them, I would get new knives. If I needed to use my coolant and poop covered EDC to cut restaurant food, I'd eat somewhere else or send it back for them to get it right. I had filet mignon at a fancy place yesterday and the butter knife was all I needed and even then it push cut just fine (steak knife never got used).

Maybe some people grill steaks on Ferrari engines and have $400.00 pocket folding steak knives. not knocking that life style but just pointing out most people are not going to be comfortable eating insulation they cut earlier in the day when they go out to eat.

With the exception of a few guys in this thread that i know use their knives, but also knowing what i know about many of the members here that steak is probably the most action many of knife has seen in years. Well if it was actually kept that long, lol.

Yes, I keep forgetting you are the only one here who uses their knives. Thanks for reminding me.

Pro tip: You can clean your knife.

Have you heard of soap and water? It is this thing where you can clean stuff to make your tools food safe. I would hope that you do that with your hands (the main thing you use to touch everything) because you make it seem like once a knife is used for non food knife work it can't be "cleaned" and used for food safe activities. Would you think the same of your hands?

This made me laugh out loud. Like many things public discretion has it's place, simply as a matter of practicality.

Agreed, Customer is king in a restaurant.

That said, if you need a knife to eat that braised lamb shank, time to find a better restaurant.[/QUOTE]

Sure, believe everything the "rainbow flag" crowd tells you.

That's why many people EDC more than one knife. One is reserved for dirty duties. I've used a folder a couple times in restaurants, once a SAK and the other a Dragonfly Salt.

Lol. You obviously ain't seen how nasty a poop covered knife can get. And yeah, they were cleaned but I'm sure somewhere between the scales and liner lock and around the pivot there is some coolant soaked poop left in there.

How about the three of us go out to eat and we all get steaks. I'll rinse my knife in soap and water before we leave and you can use my soap and water cleaned knife on your steaks. Should be just fine according to you.

If them food pocket knives you carry around actually cut open poop bags and get soaked in coolant and other poison, I know you'd think the same thing I do if You were to pull it out to cut up a steak. You'd pass. If not come join me for dinner, and use my EDC to cut your steak.

Haha, Boris74 has a poop knife! :D

Yeah. Best part is my youngest son was like why don't you use the Hultafors HVK GH that's in the truck. So he went and got it for me and the santoprene handle absorbed the smell. So I literally do have a poop knife. Maybe a run through the dishwasher but that sucker makes my stainless silverware rust, so maybe not. I'd get it out a complete chunk of rust.

Not only does he have a poop knife, he doesn't know how to properly clean it before using it to eat. Them there is never truer words spoke!

You have to admit though, for someone who's like 80 years old, he works a keyboard reasonably well. LOL
