Why am I obsessed with messenger bags?

Become a forest ranger. Chase the dream while you still can...

cause messenger bags are awesome, thats' why. i have a timbuk2 that i modified the hell out of. it's just a normal, black, medium size timbuk2 but i'd attached a maxpedition rollypoly, maxpedition cocoon, timbuk2 cell phone case, gerber multitool + sheath, and a seatbelt buckle (very chromish). it's very MOLLE-styled, and i carry it everywhere i go.

they're useful
generally inexpensive
make a statement about you
and they're fun to use - all the zipper compartments
what to put where

I should get one of those instead of my standard type backpack.

Seems like there would be more room for large knives and guns.

do they have much rigidity? my main complaint with my backpack is it's shapelessness- when I put stuff in it, the stuff gets jumbled around, my large knives fall over & lay in the bottom.

Depending on how large you're talking, most messenger bags have side pockets inside, that would be perfect for knives.

Yes, they definitely have rigidity, especially the heavier Cordura style bags - more than the standard type backpack, for sure

and they are great for carrying knives and all kinds of stuff
...very unobtrusive, too, if you get one in plain black nylon

A decent bike store should at least have Timbuk2 bags. If there's an REI store close by they carry them.

You could also check around for a locally produced messenger bag.

I've carried my large Timbuk2 messenger bag for 4+ years and it doesn't show any visible wear. Tough as nails and machine washable. Timbuk2 makes a really great messenger style bag. Oooh, just checked out their website and timbuk2 just added the custom option for their laptop messenger. Another benefit is that you can pick your own color scheme. A bit pricey yes, but worth every penny. Highly recommended.

I took a close look at my heavily-used two-year-old Timbuk2 large messenger bag the other day, and I have to say that except for some dust and cat hair, it looks practically brand new, inside and out. I don't think I've ever had a bag hold up so well.
