Why am I the only one I know who carries a knife?

I have seen enough comments made by other forum members that makes me think I am not alone here. No one I know carries a knife. Obviously people know SAK's, but I've never met a single person that has ever heard of a Sebenza. There is literally only one person I know, my uncle who is a taxidermist, that carries a knife every day. My brothers and close friends only own knives because I bought them for them. This really blows my mind.

I used to think it was just me and who I knew and my stupid New York state. But it seems there are others here that are in a similar prediciment. One guy just said he works with 50 other emplyees and he is the only one with a knife.

How is it possible that hardly anyone carries possibly the most imporant tool man ever created?

Anyone else feel this way? Seems ridiculous to me. Maybe I should just start hanging out with you guys.

Well technically, everyone in my department(produce), meat department, seafood, and deli uses a knife. It's just I'm the only one with a folding knife that's not a SAK. The only 2 reasons I can guess for this is 1)people watch too many movies and are afraid that carrying a pocket knife labels them a thug and 2)people are more than satisfied with the performance of their SAK, which becomes chipped/rolled/dulled to the point of not being able to slice paper inside of a month.

It could be that there are people out there with SAKs, but don't tell anyone. I had a coworker who had a SAK on his key ring, along with a small flashlight. I would guess that he was a camper.

Myself and another fella are the only people in my office that carry knives. Granted there are only 4 guys in my office and they all have knives in their desks and vehicles so I guess it's not that bad. In general I would be willing to bet 75% of males in my area carry knives though.

No one else I know on a friend/personal level carries a knife. I've converted both of my brothers and my father though who all now carry a knife everyday. My brother a ZT 350 which I gave him, my other brother o convinced to buy his on SMF, and my father carries the BM subrosa I gave him for his birthday. I'm spreading the disease.

Because they dont have a need.

I hardly ever carry a knife, I dont need one really. Same as I dont need an automatic watch, or other things of interest, for me personally.

I work in an office at a computer in a professional setting, I don't go around cutting things in my daily routine, or pretty much never.

If I do need to open up a pack of printer paper or something, I have scissors in my desk. But even that has a tear-along-line type packaging.

Maybe other people have a need, but if a camera crew followed me around for a month, they would see that I dont do activities which need a knife on me at all times.

I've given away 25 knives minimum as gifts to family and friends. (those are the ones I can remember) They were all well recieved, and most are still being put to good use and being appreciated. It's good when people understand how valuable a tool a knife can be... Is there a thread somewhere on what knives you've given away? That would be neat.

On topic - I'm the only one at work that carries a knife. It's kind of funny though, once non knife people around see how useful they can be, they rely on you when they need help with a job that requires a knife. My edc's see use every day, which is why I can them. duh. Even if it's just slicing up an apple or some other mundane task like that. Or, a rousing game of knifey-spooney. :)

It is fun to give knives away. Just gave one to a buddy of mine. He was very appreciative. It was a cold steel Voyager lock back I never use any more. He will use it all the time fishing. And now I can talk about knives with him.

I think it's all in what you do for a living and how you were raised, just because you have a knife on you doesn't mean you actually need one, just like there isn't a need to buy multiple expensive knives but we do because we like them. I carry at work because my life depends on it with some of the places I go and have used it on two different occasions to defend my life. Out of work I just use a little Skyline because thats all you really need for everyday tasks . It's simply what you like and what you need. I personally have had a knife on me sense 8 years old and would never think of going out of the house without it.

My father and father in law are the only people I know that carry knives every day. Most people don't see them as a necessary tool and get by with car key, teeth, or scissors if there lucky.

My late father (b. 1896) always carried a Barlow, as did just about everyone I remember as a boy who was of his generation. I carried a Buck out of necessity of my job for years, but anymore, now that I'm retired, I guess I carry a knife out of love for what was and for tradition more than anything else. Hell, I've got to be completely honest, my Buck sits by the bed now most of the time. Fact is I bought a Kershaw flipper (1790ckt) which is so much FUN! I guess I'm breaking with tradition a little more than I like to admit.

I agree - well said. My dad always (and still does) has carried a small pocket knife, and I think all those years I watched him use it for varoius tasks rubbed off on me. I'm 50 years old now, and when our exteneded family gets together for a party; someone will always call out to me "hey dad can you open or whatever this with your knife". Heck my dad is 85 now, and just bought a nice pocket Spyderco a couple of years ago (I just got my first Spydie).

Never really thought much about it. Pretty sure I'm the only one carrying. Seems like everyone is always asking, "Can I use your knife?"

LOL, i live in MANHATTAN, New York...
I dont know one other person here who carries knives either... now i know, mainly people's jobs are in the office here, but who cares? i'd bet every single person looks like a cutting tool, in their office or house at least 10 times a week.. how much easier would it be to have a nice little kershaw skyline or kershaw shill.. or maybe even a leek in their pocket instead of getting up, and walking to their kitchen -.-...

and yes the knife laws are very strict here, but ive been carrying different blades on me for lawful purposes for years on end and have not had a problem.. and even if they do ask me about it.... i work in construction so i guess that would get me in the clear... =p

People today haven't been taught the value of carrying a knife, most have been brainwashed to think it's a weapon. I use my pocketknife when necessary and don't share the fact that I carry one with hardly anyone. I live in the Midwest in a medium size urban area where people used to have more common sense and role models. Even here, in the prairie land that was the Old West, there are people who fear a small slip joint. Morons.

I feel you pain jackman i work with around 100 people and im the only one with a knife.
I have converted a buddy, my best friend, and my girlfriend though :D

thats my motivation, i haven't given my friend a knife but hes has used some of mine. and successfully contracted a minor knife addiction, he has owned knives before but they were cheap Chinese ones. the folder lost a screw and when he flicked it open it flew out of the handle and almost hit me in the leg. im talking him into getting a good knife, we talk knives too.

Everybody needs a knife, sometime. I know a few guys that have knives, some of those are disposable razor/utility knives, and maybe a few have a junky folder for work. But, really I'm the knife guy, and my Brother has a few that I know of. I just gave him my ESEE HEST, I haven't talked to him since then about it. He lit up when I gave it to him.
