Why am I the only one I know who carries a knife?

I was in the process of writing a long rebuttal to Kilow's post when I decided to delete it and leave him to his own devices. Me....I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Better than those morons who horseplay by making like they're going to stab someone, then that someone knocks the knife out of the moron's hands and the knife lands on the floor between my legs as I'm in my seat, after I kick myself back.

Where the hell do you work?

Hi!

Thanks for the warm welcome! So true. People act so surprised when I whip out a knife to open a package at work. Just the other day I pulled out my Endura to cut some rope and people asked me why. It's like "what would you use?"

My wife is the only other person I know who has a knife.I gave her a izula which she carries in her purse.

I believe it all has to do with how people grew up, who their family and or friends are, and or if they had a job or interests that required carrying a knife.

Add to that today's Society and the issues that go along with it.

Knives are kinda like guns, people who grew up around them, family members and friends had them etc are the ones who don't generally have issues with them, those who haven't might have issues.

It's quite large to carry on the hip, people see it, and how often will it actually get used? Live by the gun, die by the gun. Pulling a gun out during a real situation will only escalate the tension and if the other person has one too they will more then likely fire just out of pure fear and threat. Also if you are not prepared to actually kill someone or even accidentally an innocent bistandard and face murder charges then why carry one?

Obviously you have ignored how many times someone has attacked and killed others in churches, malls, schools, etc.
Are you not aware of the time when a man drove his truck through the window of a Lubys in TX, and killed several people? A lady named Suzanna Gratia Hupp was there with her parents. They were both killed. She could have stopped it probably if she had not obeyed the law and left her handgun in the car. Here is a video you should watch about it in her testimony before Congress.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1u0Byq5Qis

Fortunately the founders were wiser than those with your view and wrote the right to keep and bear arms into the Constitution. Do as you will, but whether you understand or not some of will not lay down and play dead before the thugs who attack us and our families.
Yes, I am prepared to kill if that is what is necessary to save my life or someone else. The law authorizes deadly force if you are truly in fear of death or great bodily harm. The purpose of deadly force is not to kill but to save lives. I have training and the equipment required.

Regards,
Jerry

Most of my friends don't carry a knife and none have heard of a SnG, XM-18 or a Sebenza.

I grew up with knives and most of my family carries 1 every day. My wifes family however does not carry a knife. When they asked me how much I paid for my Sage1 I told them $112 and they nearly had a heart attack. They said they would never spend more than $20 on a knife. Some people just dont get it.....

A friend of mine at work liked my Endura, but bought a Delica. He doesn't use the clip. He buries the knife in his pocket and probably I'm the only one in the world who knows he has it. I suspect there's lots more people out there like him.

To the OP. Because you are not a sheeple & are smart enough to know that a knife has sooooo many uses. Open boxes, letters/envelopes, cut your food, open packages in plastic, tighten an eyegass screw,ect..

My daughter had an anti-gun teacher. My daughter did a verbal essay on the 2nd amendment & guns. She was also asked questions by her classmates & the teacher. She remained firm & said "a gun is a tool, & to prove that, you can take a hammer & set it on a table & also take a loaded gun & set it on the table next to it. Leave them there for years & neither one will hurt anyone, until a user with unlawfull intentions uses it for purposefull harm to another." There is no shortage of people in prison for killing someone with a hammer. More than one would think. Should we outlaw hammers, knives, wrenches, baseball bats, ect... NO, just hold the criminals that use them for unlawfull purposes, accountable, to the full extent of the law. Stop making up BS excuses of bad upbringing, bad neighborhoods, drug use/abuse, alcohol, ect... , as reasons to give them a break & reduce thier sentence. I am a firm believer in "Peace through superior fiepower." My daughter got an A. I was proud of her & got to meet the teacher. She said my daughter made her re-think her anti-gun position. I am NOT a sheeple.

That reminds me. I have a friend with a teenage son in the Scouts. He was going on a weklong jamboree somewhere, and I wanted to make him a nice user bushcraft knife to use...well, out in the bush. The Dad told me that the Scouts are no longer allowed to carry fixed-blade knives; everything has to be a folder, and a non-locking folder at that.

What? I'm sorry if you're a fan of the folding knife, but there are things you simply can't do with a folding knife that you can with a fixed blade, and a lot of things you *can* do, but which are just unsafe.

I was very disappointed in the BSA at that point.

My understanding after a talk with some guys at my district HQ is that the no Fixed Blade rules are on a troop by troop basis, and BSA has no ban on them. There is one troop around here that will not allow scouts to carry knives, they must be carried by the Scout Master, or Assistant Scout Masters until the boys need them and the knives must be of the standard "Scout" pattern slipjoint or SAK family. As an Eagle scout I find this grossly inappropriate and wonder where the lessons of responsibility have gone, but thats a topic for another discussion. I would speak with the Scout Master of the troop, typically asking them to explain why a fixed blade has a more dangerous edge than a folding knife argument works well.

Had to show a coworker how to use a liner lock yesterday while cutting rope, he is a very bright well educated college boy only a year younger than me and you have to wonder if he can't figure out a pocket knife lock how prepared can he really be after all that school?

TwinStick,

Kudos to your daughter. Your daughter thought it through and was able to communicate on paper in a very logical manner. I am impressed.

Kudos to her teacher too. Much too often, teachers with opposing views will give students lower marks. I am happy that her teacher is rethinking their anti-gun attitude. It shows that they are a thinking person.

Thanks for sharing the story.

Agreed. You may have seen the Facebook conversation screenshot wherein a hardcore feminist refused to cite her sources on unsubstantiated claims and said "Well you need to take a women's studies course to understand the issue"...

I appreciate professors and teachers with such emotionally-charged views that are willing to take the time and truly look at the other side instead of proclaiming incessant superiority over others that may feel differently on a topic.

I too am the only one in my circle of friends who carries a knife everyday and has a collection of knives. Most of my friends know I always have one and will ask to use it when needed but they still never find the need to carry one themselves. I view knives as a too and not as a weapon, a 2.5in blade would make a pretty shitty weapon and would distract me more than anything else when actually trying to defend myself with my bare hands.
What I really don't understand are people who carry a gun everyday with them. I hate guns they are not a tool and it's onl purpose is as a weapon. Consider that a knife or firearm may actually de-escalate/diffuse a very tense situation. Everyone has their own belief system, but I am willing to be judged by my actions. You have to assume that if someone "pulls a gun or knife" that they are going to use it. I don't believe it works like you see on TV where the actors talk a criminal into dropping their weapon. They are ordered to do so or there are consequences if the LEO feels they or others are endangered.

I guess i must be one of the lucky ones! Almost everyone in my family or work is carrying a knife. Dad is a old farmer, carries a buck, father in law carries a multitool, brother in law is a trooper, carries a emerson, other brother in law is volunteer firefighter, carries a buck and multitool, looking at a resuce knife. Almost all the women i know at least have a keychain knife. I work construction so a knife is a nessicity and everyone carries something. I guess i forget how rare it is to NOT carry a knife until i'm forced to go shopping and see how few sheeple actually carry. Of course of all the people i mentioned who carry, i would be the only real collector...

Thanks. I warned her ahead of time that the teacher may give her a bad mark for a subject she does not like. College Prof's are much more likely to do so. It happened to our babysitter years ago. :grumpy: She was failed for her 2nd amendment views. She appealed it, to no avail. She turned in the exact same paper the following year, same class, different teacher & got a B+. :D I have ALWAYS told my kids, that a gun or a knife is simply a tool, & the tool ONLY DOES what the user tells it to, & as with ANY TOOL, it has the capability to cause great harm or death if not handled properly & safely. :D I am proud of my kids & thier ability to articulate facts on these subjects. She is always asking me good questions. Once she asked me how to tell if a gun or knife law is a good one or a bad one. That took some thought, but i came up with the following. Easy---If the law imposes resrictions on law-obiding, tax paying, productive members of society, then it is a bad law. If it imposes more restrictions & tougher sentencing, only on criminals who misuse guns or knives, then it is a good law.

Thanks again.

i made it 36 years without a need to carry a knife everyday. I could still get away without carrying one everyday. It's a choice to do so as it is a choice for most people who enjoy knives I would imagine.

I have had my own knives for the last 25yrs +, only in my early 30's I.d say I got a pretty good jump on most people I know when it comes to knives....and I actually have almost every single knife I have ever purchased/or had bought for me as a gift, probably around 120 or so. Just about all production knives and not many worth more than 100 dollars. Most valued at far less. But as sentimental value goes, they are a gold mine. I can remember goubg to shows and my grandad waiting till the last moments before we left and saying "see anything ya like" and of course I did, so we go and he'd usually get 2, one for him and one for me.

I guess I kunda got side tracked, but I so much enjoyed rading the posts in this thread, I just had to share. Ito answer the origional questiond, no I dont carry every.day, well not a knife anyhow, but a few in my faimly have for as ling as I can remember, and a few buddies that have gotten into knives, mostly cauae I make them, and give them to them, but even tho I dont carry every day, I can honestly say in some way a knife has been a part of my daily life for as long as I sorry to ramble, maybe I had to many beers tonight ;)
