Why Are Chute Knives So Expensive?

I guess I still don’t fully understand the OP. As he mentions, there is this:

$255 at KSF. What exactly in the pattern disqualifies it ? Or is it simply too cheap ? :)

I've loved the Chute knife concept for years and have two of Bob's, neither have the holes in the guard. This thread has been great for information, really appreciated T.K.'s description of what it takes! I've owned Chutes by George Herron, Thad Buchanan, John Young, Rob Brown and Bill Ankrom. I have a modified version by Warren Goltz, pretty cool and under $300.00 from Nordic Knives.

For me what did it was the fact that it's a convex grind, nothing bad about bark river or the knife as a cutting tool. I just personally don't like a convex grind because it's just more trouble in resharpening than I would prefer, so at this point I think I'll save my money and reach out to a custom maker that can make me a chute knife with ivory micarta and the classic hollow grind

I don't believe the lack of holes in the double guard disqualify what most of us makers call a chute knife - I get most of my orders requesting a lack of holes in the double guard. Like this Ram's Horn/RWL-34 chute I just finished.......the profile is from an original Bob Loveless Chute pattern sent to me by Jim Merritt. However, when I make a spec chute up for grabs, I'll put the holes in the double guard as it adds more elements to the knife.

You would be correct, my statement was more about highlighting that the Mk.1 chute knives had them. But even Mr. Loveless himself made a lot of them without the holes from what I've read.

Totally forgot about Marcus Lin!!!! He does some incredible work too!!!
he sure does. I snagged this one from the Bladeforums classifieds for the price of a good production knife. It's amazing what you can find if you commit yourself to being patient and looking around.

These are all some beautiful knives! I've already sold off a good chunk of my collection among other things I had laying around collecting dust. So now I just gotta wait to find myself a chute knife.

A Loveless style Chute Knife, perfectly executed, is a challenging knife - 8" and 3" hollow grinds, rounded ricasso, perfectly soldered/pinned double guard. hollow ground/tapered tang with liners, mirror finish. This is not an entry level knife. A well done custom Loveless style Chute at $450 is rock bottom as far as pricing goes IMHO. A cool design and very popular :)

Then there are all kinds of embellishments to the Chute such as sub hilts, rear bolsters, holes in the double guard, extra blade length, mammoth ivory, etc, that really drive up that $450 price.o_O:rolleyes:

the blued one is gorgeous (both are excellent but dayumn)

As far as expense goes I think RWL stated "the double hollow grind is the most difficult grind to execute to perfection" not positive to.
