Why are coated so much cheaper

I am looking for a HR2. They range from $500 to $2000. The cheaper ones are all coated. Does this signify that there is more of these INFI dimples that I read about on the blade and that is why there is such a significant price difference? I would love the competition finish but no way I am paying over $700 for it. Can I strip the coated blades and have a chance at buffing to a shiny finish?

Sorry for such a silly question. I recently saw the show Dexter and in an episode he used a Busse which i do believe was an HR and I fell in love. I like the HR2 blade better though so that is what I am searching for.

No need to pay those prices or strip it yourself. You can order a new HR2 in Competition from the Busse website for $437 plus $14.95 for shipping. https://www.bussecombat.com/busse-hell-razor-2-competition-finish/

ETA: You could also by a coated knife for $40 less direct from Busse, but you never know what you're going to get under the coating. You might get a nice clean blade, or you might find some deep grinder gremlins.

Coatings are cheap, paying a craftsman to polish out tool marks is expensive.

Coatings are like cosmetics, it's there to cover up the ugly.

2000.00 ?!?!?!
That may be slightly high ;)

But what John said go direct to the source if you can.
If they are discontinued then you will pay a bit more,....................but 2000.00 wow must have mammoth tooth or mastodon ivory scales or something
good luck on your search.

This, plus they have less room for error in material removal, especially on the fatter models. I love the satin finishes and they are even worse to produce....why they aren't so common, I suppose.

>$1000 ones are probably rare one-offs, variants, or custom shop pieces.

The reason for the higher price is labor and/or machine time.
Some people like coated blades for added coronation resistance and protection from elements. Coatings, as you would imagine, actually adhere better to surfaces that have more texture, so the finishing process doesn’t have to be as “fine”. For a BIG DC, competition, BIG Satin, or satin finish, there are many more steps of finishing beyond what a coated blade would have. You’re paying for the additional machining and labor costs.

Whether it is “worth it” is very subjective, and may change from person to person, or depending on your intended purpose for the knife.

For example, I bought one coated blade with the intention to try to strip and polish and change the handles to make it my own. I preferred paying less and having an “adventure” with it, rather than buying or trading for a comp finish.

Wow you guys sure answer quick around here. I have been monitoring the classifieds for 2 weeks and most are sold within minutes of posting. What is the lead time on a new build? I used to collect custom 1911s and have waited years before so a wait would not be bothersome.

That makes sense that a dimpled surface makes for a better adhesion for a coating. I will not go that route. It's going to be comp finish or bust...

I ordered my coated one on july 6 and had it in my hands august 8.
I bet those expensive ones are original hell Razors, not the HR2.
Are you seeing those on the big auction site that shant be named?

Nice! I will order Monday if I don't find one on here.
Just order it now, unless you want specific handles that you can't order...they'll only charge a dollar to confirm the card; the balance will be charged a short time before shipping. Never count on models being there until you're ready to buy them - grab them when they're available, and sort out the finances while you're waiting

If I assume the models shift often on the site. I better go ahead and order now. Thanks!
They do. Models are introduced and once they’re gone, they’re generally discontinued unless there’s a rare re-release or a new variant.

I haven’t caught up with that show yet... but I recall someone saying they saw him using a BWM.... are there multiple Busses in the show??

No only one scene in Dexter at the shooting range. I recognized the end of the handle. It was a quick scene. I took a guess at it so I am sure you are correct. I know it was longer than 6" but not nothing crazy long. A HR was a good guess. I am new and not familiar YET with the million or so style knives that came out of the shop.

love the orange. What is the deal with handles? Are they regularly available or are they custom made for each style of knife and once they are gone they gone? I was approached on a heck of a deal on a NFSH so I won't get the honor of picking my handles (grips? scales?) Sorry I'm a 1911 guy. BTW I love the sharpening sheet. Its kind of like the test target in my 1911s.

I ordered this one recently on a Wednesday at lunch time, it was in my hand Friday at 330pm.View attachment 1420908

There were. Garth said they had "a ton of Busse blades." There was a Boss Jack early on, and Garth identified one as a prototype Cali-legal Argonne Attack (I think that was the gun range knife). And I think that was this one:

They don't show the full knife long enough to take a screenshot, it just comes out blurry. Has anyone positively identified it yet? :D

Maybe a Team Gemini too, I'm pretty sure there were others.

*The Argonne Attack was released in January 2016, as you can see on the archived order page here. Someone suggested that it was an Argonne Attack, but I said it couldn't be, because they weren't released yet. Garth chimed in and said it was a prototype that they'd supplied to the show before the final version was released.
