Why are Emerson customs so expensive?

Paul brought up the same question I have always had, and I agree with him whole-heartedly

While I am not as familiar as some are on his knives, I have no doubt his factory knives are patterned off of his designs. But does he cut his customs himself, does he just do the grinds, does he pull parts off the line and then customize them? Honestly I don't know the answer to these questions and I'm sure someone will enlighten me. but when I think of customs, I think of someone starting from scratch on every one of the knife components.
