why are local stores always a let down?

When things are not available then one has to improvise. Brake lines new or used are great for thong holes, and polish up nice. For pin stock I rely on welding and brazing rods. I gently tap off the coating with a hammer, and then clean them up with steel wool prior to use. Chunks of brass can often be found in scrap yards and dumps for use as guards. I also use the band saw cuttings from profiling out knives for guards.

They have 303, 316 stainless round in 3/16" and A2 annealed drill rod starting at 1/16" Page 280 of their catalog.

I've also found a package of stainless tent pegs for a couple of bucks at our local 'offshore import' store.

Your hobby store should have at least brass tube. I have used the flexible 1/4" copper refrigerator water tubing for thong tubing before.

Wow, thanks for all the suggetions. It sounds like my problem locating supplies has been a common obstacle.

I still am wondering about something though. Many of you have suggested some very resourceful options for pin material, everything from tent pegs to nails, I think there was even one about cutting up a grate from a grill. What I'm a little confused with is do I need to attempt to find a "soft" metal that will sand well. I'm having some trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that if I have a makeshift metal pin that the wood will not sand down substantially faster than the pin. Or am I just overcomplicating it? Will anything work?

i had the same worries initially. but its not hard to keep them even, just give it a go and see what happens!

when I used brass for the pins and oak for the handles, it wasn't that big a deal for me. I kept the plane of sanding flat so than the wood around the pin wouldn't be much lower than the pin because the pin would hold the paper away from the wood until it was sanded down.

in the end I think the brass pin stuck up a little, but I was not going for a pure flush look, i like the riveted pin look.
