why are Microtech folders so expensive?

Well I was afraid it was #1 and #2. I think I will pass on them for now. Thanks!

You're gonna be passing a lot of knives with that logic I'm afraid. Pretty much every knife you buy (high end, not value folders) will carry a price tag due to name and the perceived value for the knife.

Believe it or not....MT is rather cheap compared to higher end like CRK, Strider, Hinderer. I don't mind buying used cause MT is very solid...like a tank. I have a DOC & SF Tac....

That's what I was going to say.
You obviously have not ever used a Microtech.

Do yourself a favor and buy Vero Beach MTs. Quality was much better pre-04.

Just like anything else design and materials have to be there first and foremost. Surely MT knives aren't for everyone. The Socom knives are their only offering that really do it for me. That's why I have one. In the hand it is very obvious that it is a well made product. I would certainly put it on par with any other production Co's higher offerings and it is similarly priced. I don't think it is any better built than say a Spyderco Military but it is obviously fancier. But if someone were even considering a Sebenza or a Strider SnG I'd say the extra bucks are well spent.

I have handled a few MTs, and I can safely say that their price is mostly name and what people will pay. If you want to find a legit price for a knife, look at similar stuff from opposing companies. If you can get better materials for significantly less, the knife in question is overpriced.

Don't buy into people saying you are paying for the tolerances like you do with Hinderer and CRK. Some of their knives do go out without an issue, but a lot of them do not. MT has had a bout of the last few years of a perceived drop in QC, either because people are noticing more issues, or the QC is actually diminishing.

MT has a few cool designs, but I would say that unless you were looking for an auto look elsewhere. One thing not mentioned is the abundance of proprietary screws on MT knives. I'll stick with Torx and Allan. No point in keeping a knife around that I can'tbreak down and clean.

They don't seem any more expensive than other brands that sell similar styles of knives with similar materials.

As with any product, you are paying for name, rep, materials, marketing and level of workmanship.

The price of any knife is based on what people will pay. That's not just MT.

And are people buying MT knives? If they are...they are not overpriced. No one overpays for any non essential item,

You are going on the assumption that the value you place on an object is what everyone else should.

Why does MT charge the prices they do? Because people feel they are worth it.

I personally do not find them more expensive than other companies offering similar fit, finish, and materials. The QC picked back up in 2011 and their quality seems very good like it originally was. I would say they are on the high end but still competitive with ZT and other companies. Yes they have had some issues before and a few of their designs are controversial. Overall I like the company and think their products are good and worth the price. Are their other options and better? Sure their is but you pay for them as well.

MicroTech knives are quality. I have several. Great heat treat, fit & finish and materials. Cutting edge designs. One gripe is their stupid proprietary screws!

yes they are. have you compared there prices to the low end USA made knifes?? but you get what you pay for. they got one heck of a warranty. plus they don't break down every other day like the cheap ones do. the average person can not afford to spent that much money on a knife.

I have seen a $10k iPhone case. And they have sold enough to keep the company in business. There will always be things that are grossly overpriced.

That aside, look at the prices of similar items. You can find much better for much less depending on what you are looking for, or you can'tfind aanything better for twice as much. I know I totally discredited production costs (and the additional cost of variants, which MT has a butt load of), and I did say that MT does have good autos II'm just saying that their regular knives are, to me at least, very unimpressive. The designs are fugly for a lot of them, then they have those bloody screws...

I have never owned a MT, so I can't comment on their longevity or CS. I can, however, say that unless I am looking for a good auto I will stick elsewhere. The price is just too high, especially since companies like ZT and BM have great warranties and CS, and their prices are much lower to boot.
