Why are para 2s so expensive now

They would acutally cost less if they were made in Taiwan. I just refuse to support outsourcing and will be happy to pay more for an American made product. Its why I dont own a Sage yet, I think it might be one of the best small EDC knives on the market but until it is made in Golden I wont own one.

This thread is not about off shore production, do stop derailing it. If you don't want to buy a specific product then by all means, pass it by. If you cannot contribute to the topic (shortage of a specific knife) then again, move along.
Sal, Ernest Emerson, Thomas W, and other manufacturers have stated repeatedly in the past that when a specific knife is out of stock, it's the result of the production for other knives being scheduled. Spyderco is a relatively small company, they do not run shifts 24/7/365, they make other products, have government contracts and other items that require attention.

This is exactly how I feel too but don't let them drag you into a discussion about outsourcing. People get all weird about it on here and then the mods will get after you.

The reason is because some members cannot seem to write relevant and coherent commentary about this topic. If it turns into a discussion about one another and not the knives, then what is the point of being in General Knife Discussion?

You know, Im going to call BS here. At the risk of receiving some "infraction" I would like to call attention to the title of this thread: "Why are para 2s so expensive now"

Where and how these knives are manufactured is relevant to cost. And I think if the discussion wanders into the realm of "what if spyderco started producing them overseas?" that should be ok. Conversations naturally progress and evolve. The OP's question has been more or less answered directly, but if it happens to stimulate a greater discussion, why stifle that?
We're still talking about the Para 2, and we're still talking about cost.
If somebody had a problem with a potential scenario involving those relevant factors, then he/she should be able to discuss it without being sent to the corner for a time out.

Its nonsense. Sorry.

Good points.

The PM2's are high class folders. Great blade-steel; wonderful compression lock. Everything nice. My favorite folder of all times, at least for the money.

No, it wasn't nonsense. RevDevil said what needed to be said.

OP, they should show up pretty soon for $110, or less.
Thats a bargin for such a great knife. Also keep an eye on the exchange.
The Sprints will cost more, but the plain ones come up here every now and then at a good price.

I have seen it happen time and again. Threads get derailed when members attack each other or an individual... Discussing each others' beliefs and philosophies or whatever isn't the problem here. It's when fingers get pointed and the debate turns to RIDICULE. Unfortunate as plenty of interesting topics end up getting weird before a fulfilling resolution of sorts is met. Just saying.

Guys be a little patient while Spyderco catches up to demand. They are expanding their Golden Co. facility. You will get your standard PM2 for $110 or less in to time :)

Maybe if more of you people bought from overseas, sal would have more money, thus increasing the U.S. factory. Thus making it bigger to produce more USA made knives. Seriously who gives a shit about where spyderco makes some of their knives. It still puts money in sals pocket... plus my Gayle Bradleys F&F is just ad good, if not better than my U.S. made spydies.

I noticed the Paras went up when everybody started raving about them, a little less than a year ago. They were available readily before that for a bit over a 100. Now I see them out of stock at all the dealers and going for way too much on ebay. As long as they are in high demand this won't stop unless Spyderco ramps up production and floods the market. (not likely)

How long has the pm2 been around? It's been the "knife of the moment" for a long moment. I wouldn't mind if they moved production. I'd be lying if I said that I wouldn't try to grab a US made model pretty quickly though. :D

It came out towards the end of 2010- first of 2011 I believe, But it didn't really get this popular until about a year ago.

Also where can I get one for $110 or less because I love my current one and want another for a good price and not a crazy price
Contact reliable dealer and ask him/her to put your name on the waiting list

Actually not. Sal mentioned on few occasions, that Spyderco is using Taichung maker not to save on cost, but due lack of capacity at Golden and high quality and capabilities of the maker.

look at the AG Russell web site. They have the Para Military, at a good pricve

Exactly. There hasn't been a single "cheap" knife coming from Taiwan since they started making folders for Spyderco. Every model has been top shelf stuff, with the highest levels of consistent F&F.

Going back to topic, the Para 2 has been in high demand since release. It's common to see it out of stock in various retail sites. If they only convert it to wire clips, it would be the perfect knife for me.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that the PM2 is still in production and based on what I can gather, it's not going to go away any time soon. So this isn't an "if" problem, it's only a "when" problem. As the OP already has a PM2 and won't be deprived of it by waiting for more to arrive, I'd suggest he take bh49's advice:

Contact reliable dealer and ask him/her to put your name on the waiting list.

That may not lead to instant gratification, but it WILL get the job done.

You could always send your ti Military to tuffthumbz who will grind it down to a PM2. Haha

Though I wouldnt reccommend this, as it would end up costing more than $350 total
