Why are people cutting so much cardboard?

Why all the worry about the knives getting used? You can't take it with you, so you might as well use it. If you are 40 or older, you are likely closer to the exit than the entrance, so use your stuff!
I’m 67 so I guess this applies, plus since I received this from Crag it has a place right near the recycling bin. City has a strict size requirement 2’x2’ so let the fun continue😉IMG_1082.jpeg

If I'm going to spend my time sharpening something I'd rather it be a knife I love and appreciate than something that is made to be disposable. I value my time and sharpening a 14 cent razor blade doesn't make sense.
What can I say, I just like blades and don’t mind the 20 secs it takes to swipe it on a stone or ceramic stick every now and then. Takes about the same time to change it out and it seems wasteful to toss it when it’s just a little dull.
Now if it’s buggered up or the tip gets rounded I swap in a new one, but only after I flip it around and use the other sharp side first.

Ouch…. That hurt a bit.
I use everything I like without reservation.

Honest question: is it necessary in any capacity to have to physically cut the cardboard itself?

Yes.

This is very much NOT something I would torture the edge on a 420HC becuase it would just wear it out in a hurry.

Can’t speak for 420HC but I know that when ground thin behind the edge my 8CR13MoV, a very basic stainless, will cut cardboard all day, requiring little more than periodic stropping on said cardboard to keep going. I’ve demonstrated that on here before.

I believe the majority that does this most likely has an office job, so they need something to do to put their "tools" to use?

I buy large sheets of cardboard to cut into appropriately sized boxes to ship knives in.

I know people say cutting cardboard is hard on a knife. But I don't think so.

Agreed. Or at least I’ve not met any cardboard that poses a real challenge to my knives.

That being said, cardboard is horrible for dulling edges, and I hate getting glue residue on my knives

Proper geometry can give you better edge retention and acetone can clean off residue in seconds. Then a soap and water wash can make it food safe again.

I do keep drooling over some of those. Ever thin out a Persistence? Over 3" at work is too scary for the overlords.

I try to use the smaller amazon boxes for shipping items out but it gets annoying having them saved up around the house.

On the bright side, like 2 out of 4 repurposed packages end up mailing priority speed even when using a usps standard ground label. It's all in the pinstripes ;)
