Why are Spyderco knives so ugly?

I once did collect them but got tired of that hump that seems to be on most of there knifes☹️.

I disliked the looks for awhile and wouldn't even consider one. Most of them all looked the same.

Until I found a exclusive manix 2 that I really liked. I have bought more than my share since then.
They have all been more than excellent and comfortable knives.

I also like the hump, it's a great thumb ramp. I have bought a few other knives and they all sit in the drawer, while a spyder goes with me for the day.

Of the 3 Spyderco knives I own, the one I like the best (Southard Positron) exhibits none of the usual Spyderco traits. And no, I'm not particularly a Spyderco fan.

Because, if they weren’t ugly and have the thumb hole in the blade, they wouldn’t be a Spyderco.
Spyderco is the most recognized brand I own by the folks I work with that aren’t knife people. Believe it or not, people ask me to help them pick out a knife and Spyderco is the brand they’re looking for.

You have a wildly different idea of "ergonomic" and "feel great in hand" than I do. I have yet to find a Spyderco that's remotely comfortable to use. I have a PM2, Manix 2, Endura, Tenacious, Cat, Native 5, and Ladybug. None of them have a remotely comfortable handle. Too thin, too angular, humps and grooves in all the wrong places. Would it kill Spyderco to fill out a handle a little bit to put some meat there to grip? Overly sculpted in 2 dimensions does not make an ergonomic knife, just one almost as sharp at the handle as at the blade.
As someone with bigger hands, the ergos have always been spot on for me. Also, I will say that though I've got plenty of knives with larger, wider grips, they tend to be left at home while slimmer handled knives come along for the day because they ride well in the pocket.

But hey, there are knives out there for everyone.

I have 3, chap, para 3 and para 2 so the range of the Sizes. All very comfortable in hand, although I think not made for hours long use. I think only a fixed blade is really meant for that. The looks of Spyderco have grown on me over years to where I really admire them now.

I think they look beautiful ... beautifully utilitarian - which I like.

My Harley Davidson Road Glide is in what Harley call "Denim Black" but everyone else my refer to as BBQ paint black.

I also like Becker fixed blades which also are utilitarian and look every bit the part.
That "Black Denim" is awesome. I had that on a Sporty years ago. It's a great black for Hogs.

Spyderco really grew on me once I go a Native 5 with a G10 handle, a great small modern lock-back and very user friendly.

2 years ago I didn't have much of an opinion. I was interested in the Shaman for a while and after finally getting one, I love that thing.
Great egos, very "slicey", multiple deployment options that are pretty easy to use, it has a lot of pluses for me on a larger folder.

There are older models that I'd like to pick up if they ever become available again.

Spydercos are like SAKs in that they both get the job done quite handily. But, I also want something that looks good to me and that means bone or wood with some nickel silver or brass. I make room in my pockets for both.

I used to think the same way, but after seeing them bazillion times, I got used to, even started to like them. Well..most of them not all :)

Sell Them!

This question was answered by Spyderco in an interview. Check out the Blade HQ Spyderco factory walk through on YouTube, they ask the owners basically that same question. Like others said, they're more focused on usable knives and look is secondary

Sounds like you need a Shaman. I handled one at the store in Golden, and it was really nice, but too large for my taste. I carry a Manix 2 pretty often, so the Shaman might be what you're looking for.

Why? Because they are made that way. But I don't like thumbstuds and flippers either.
