Why are spyderco so popular?

I never owned a Spyderco until last week, when I picked up a gray FFG Endura 4. It is a very nice knife. The ergonomics are amazing. It is extremely sharp. It seems like they have looked at everything, and ironed-out all of the bugs. Now I understand "Spyderco mania."

Because it's required for membership or even lurking on Bladeforums. Actually, it's the hole. No, the huge variety on scales. Or maybe...... I don't know the cult like following reasons either. I have a couple, and they are good knives. That said, I don't worship the Spydie.

I own four Spydercos, and my new EDC is a Spyderco Resilience.

Number one thing. They work. If you want a knife that cuts grab a FFG Spyderco, if you want a really budget version grab something like a Byrd Meadowlark 2 in FRN. It doesn't matter which you pick, you grab something and it cuts it. The only difference in steel is how often you'll need to sharpen it.

Their knives fit well in your hand, and the thumb hole was a great innovation that is copied (in one form or another) by a lot of manufacturers now.

I don't know that I'd consider myself fanatical, but I can certainly respect Sal and his company for producing an excellent product for a reasonable price.

I own three spydies and they're easily the best slicers that I own. Love what they do with FFG VG10 steel.

Also really like Sal. I had a couple of questions about my Superleaf on their forum and Sal answered my questions directly.

for the same reason people love doughnuts, because of the hole :D
I don't know if you were kidding or not, but the hole is the main reason. In fact I will never EDC a blade without a hole.

All the rest IMO are good reasons too I guess.
• They have affordable and high end.
• They have a variety of locks (though for me they find a way to always put the wrong lock type on the design I like).
• They have a variety of sizes.
• They have some interesting designs (Dodo, Lava, Kiwi, Balance come to mind).

That said, there is a lot of Internet fanboyism. Be careful of the hype. Not all knives are for everyone, but chances are Spyderco will make something pretty close to what you like. Unless of course you don't like a hole. :D

First of all, most of the standard models, just simplly excel at cutting. Then there's the ergonomic part, which a lot of people(including me)find pretty awesome with Spydercos.

Then there's the participation of Sal Glesser, the owner in various boards. He accepts inputs from his customers resulting in designs that are customer driven.

And then there's the various sprint runs...

^^^ I don't think it can be summed up better than this.

They're good well made, reasonably priced knives. They cut really well, they use good steels, and they have a lot of variety in handle materials, so if you like color, if you like carbon fiber, if you want titanium...they probably have *something* close to what you're looking for.

Now if you're like me, and dislike the Spydie hole(I hate the stupid hole, it's ugly and I don't care what anyone says, unless you make it even uglier by ghetto waving it I find a knife easier and faster to open with thumbstuds) you're basically screwed, but oh well. Also don't find most of their blade shapes very attractive either, though they work well enough(so I would never go out of my way to collect most of them, but I'd be fine using one).
