Why are you fascinated with knives?

Fascinated? Pfffttt... I haven't been fascinated with a knife in my 20 years at BFC or the decades before I joined.

Haven't been fascinated with the hundreds of knives that have passed through my hands, ain't fascinated with the dozens I currently own either.

Really don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Are you looking for a pat on the head?

Everyone here, including you, knew exactly what he was asking.

It is the most basic tool, inherent to one of our most basic needs, food.

More than that though, it's a small, cheap and perhaps most importantly, precise force multiplier to our own physical attributes. You can rip a loaf apart but you can neatly cut a slice with a knife. You can carry on using that precise cut for something that our hands simply can't accomplish like cutting a rope or whittling a piece of wood. Any beast can use brute strength to build or destroy. The knife brings a human finesse to the table.

Tarzan movies started my fascination. It helped that both my mother and father had farms and I grew up knowing the value of cutting tools. I have carried a bali in a back pocket since high school. I lived a sort of outdoorsy life spending days at the beach or the boondocks so we cooked often and cut mostly food but some other materials too.

Frankly, I thought it was a great laughter inducing message here, and I nearly spilled my coffee... well done!

I usually get a similar response from my family when I act ignorant about my interest in knives, all in good fun though.
Thanks

LOL! My family members are big eye-rollers around here too.

Yeah, some folks might not read enough of my posts to realize the levity that I like to inject into them.

It's all good. I'm used to being misunderstood whether it be at work, at home or right here on the ol' B.F. dot C.

A big thank you to all you folks who appreciate the humor in that post! Y'all keep this world spinnin' 'round for me.

A combination of OWEN K number 1 answer and BIGFATTYT ape explanation-

Use of tools is what separates us from the other primates, the knife is the simplest tool. Therefore, the symbol of our dominance over the other primates.

On a tactical note, I like them for a few reasons - less chance of unintended targets being struck (a stray knife never goes down the street and kills an innocent bystander). Also, while they are most definitely a "force multiplier" the original force is multiplied to varying levels. A 140# weakling and a 200# fighter deliver EXACTLY the same force (on target) when they press a 5# trigger. Give the same 2 folks a knife and their physical attributes matter more than they did when they were shooting at each other. I like the fact that, with a knife, it still matters how capable you were BEFORE the introduction of the Force Multiplier. Also - they're personal. While I do carry a handgun and most of my jobs have involved one, I think that if folks ONLY had contact weapons, using them would require more provocation. For example - two guys, at a distance, talking smack and posturing (i believe) are more likely to resort to violence if they can do so WITHOUT closing that distance, getting into "bad breath range" where they actually have to make contact and end up with exchanging fluids. Basically - 2 guys with pistols are more likely to get stupid than 2 guys with machetes.
