Why BladeForums.com doesn't ship overseas...

Kisu, we'll send the giveaway knives to non-US residents, however, it if's lost in transit we won't be able to replace them.

Spark, did I get this correct: the problem isn't knives are getting lost, but USPS isn't delivering their insurance? I mean if the knives are insured you would get the money back from USPS - and everything should be ok for you. Did I miss something, what is the problem? I've not tried insured USPS yet, but otherwise USPS has been very good. With the next expensive knife I would have tried USPS, but now I'd like to hear more about this USPS insurance thing. After all on their web-page they say that the insurance is not for all destination countries... so as long as you are sending the knife to a country that is listed for the USPS insurance everything should be fine. USPS can not say that because it's lost in another country they are not responsible - they are if you are using their insurance. But I'd like to hear more. (Any lawyers out there that could help us?) What about the insurances of FedEx or UPS?

Hugo.

The problem is the frequency of items turning up missing compared to the number of times we ship stuff overseas, and the amount of time it takes to get our money back, as well as the amount of time it takes to run through the red tape to begin with.

It's not worth it.

When we lose 1 knife out of 70, that's a significant hit in our profit for that run. BladeForums.com doesn't make that much money. Combine that with the difficulty of getting any information out of the USPS, and we're not going to do overseas business with them any longer.

So, I understand that eventually you will get the money from the USPS insurance, right? How long does it take usually? Are the others (FedEx, UPS) better in that respect?

I'm asking because like I said I will be buying many knives from USA still and I still haven't found the best shipping method. Except for cheaper stuff I like to use uninsured plain airmail... when it doesn't say "expensive knife" on the envelope it should not attract unwanted attention. And for cheap knives I'm willing to take the risk of losing the knife. Also the shipping costs are much lower compared to anything else. (BTW, I think I would have gotten a plain edge BF Native if you would have sent it like this then - maybe I should have asked personally for that option.)

Hugo.

Hmmm... Spark, maybe "Not shipping overseas" should be rephrased as "Not shipping overseas via USPS." You can still ship overseas, but you can us UPS or FedEx. Though it may be more expensive, it's the overseas buyer's option whether or not he/she decides to proceed or not, right?

I guess to utilize the shipping cost to the max, overseas buyer would have to buy more, to make use of the expensive shipping cost of using UPS or FedEx.

But then, that's the buyer's prerogative.

We're not going to ship overseas by UPS or FedEx Why? Because

1. There's much more customs red tape.
2. We're going to declare exactly what the knife is and how much it's worth (so some of you are going to get taxed 100%)
3. It's a real pain in our ass to go through all of this.
4. Our UPS shipping terminal is not set up for overseas shipping and rates.
5. We're not set up to ship by FedEx.

As for how long it takes to get the money back from the USPS, it's taking around 6-9 months for some of them, and you have to factor in that we then have to send another knife out or get a chargeback and wind up losing even more money in the meantime. It's not worth the hassle.

Hugo,
normaly, but thats only here in austria and i dont know if its the normal way elsewhere, the postal office waits at least 90 days before they refund anything because of thats the time period "any" package could take. until then you can start to fight with them for refunds. so get prepared to wait +3 months.
