Why blue G-10?

I don't think anybody has ever mistaken my bright yellow Mini-Griptilian for a highlighter, but I've never got an adverse reaction from anyone when I used it.

I always thought the yellow was friendly looking (like the smiley face) or sporty looking, or even tool-like (think Stanley screwdrivers).

OTOH, my wife informed me that the number one favorite color of psychos was yellow (she heard this in her college psych class).
She also read somewhere that "in nature" yellow is a warning sign meaning "I don't care if you see me--I'm dangerous or poisonous", like some snakes and frogs, and such.

As for the Blue G-10:
I like it very much. It's a break from all the boring black handled knives out there.

Allen.

I bought it because of the blue G10. I wanted a bright colored knife because I thought it would be fun. It is :)

Pretty colors do soothe sheeple, no doubt about that. My own grandmother (not a sheeperson but not a knife person either) thought that my Boa was 'cute' because of the splash handle design. On the other hand my black handled SERE 2000 used to flip people out, and the two knives have the exact same size blade. The adverse reaction to black handles and blades is entirely irrational, we all know that, but it is very real. Besides, colored handles are more interesting.

They know all about my Sebenzas. They look down on Benchmades, though. Well, maybe not on my 710. That's sort of like a Spyderco with a ball lock that sticks out on the sides.

I'm bored with black G-10 and welcome some other colors although I will admit I'm not overly fond of bright blue.

I'd like to see an ivory color, maybe a cranberry, something unique.

My favorite office carry is a Benchmade 940 but I've never much liked the feel of the aluminum handles or green color. I found a neat option by going to www.chaxknives.com where Chase and Linda Axinn do some fabulous custom scales. Chase did an ivory micarta overlay on my 940 that is magnificent. In addition to fabulous craftsmanship, Chase and Linda a great people to deal with.

Another place to look for some unusual custom scale materials is www.fibermascus.com but the web site isn't up to date on what is currently available so you're best emailing and asking. Would love to see the leopard spot fibermascus on a Wegner Jr. but they aren't producing more leopard spot material for another few months.

From my experience with my Rainbow Leek, the goofier and more colorful the knife, the less it scares the sheeple. Nobody around here gets their panties in a twist over a SAK (but then, in AZ, people are probably more used to knives--probably second only to Alaska). Even though my Rainbow Leek is nearly a "switchblade", with its colors, people still didn't perceive it as a knife (at least, not in the same way as my Scarab or balisongs).

I've got a blue FRN Rescue 94mm on the way. I soooooo wanted the orange handles. IMO, either go "normal", ie: black or silver handles, or go full out against the grain. The orange handled Rescue would have been perfect in its outragousness. But alas, the 25/75 blade is only available in blue.

I've never had anyone have a problem with me having a knife with me all the time...even in plain site, as long as it was legal it's always been fine. Only every now and then with a knife out flipping around and sharpening and all that kinda stuff do people say anything, mostly just asking if I'm a knife collector/nut/lover. I don't understand the big worry of sheeple on the forums, not that it's wrong but I don't understand it.

If they don't like knives, so what? If it's legal it's legal. I don't like mohawks but I don't expect those few who still sport them to make a modified mohawk for the rest of us. The people who are afraid of someone else simply having a knife on them are the weirdos.

Most of the time now I'm at work and all the other Marines got knives anyway, but out in town (San Diego area) I wear one or two 4 inch blade folders every time. Even travelling to a place that has 3" or under laws, all you gotta say is oops and you'll put it away until you are out of the state.

OrdnanceBubba,

Guess you're lucky where you are then.

In some businesses, it could be a firable offense. That would be one hell of a pink slip.

I've read this thread a couple times now, perhaps I've missed it,but where did anyone say blue matched jeans and made it easy to hide when in jeans?

My point with the Dodo is,the part that sticks above the pocket is very NARROW,BLUE,and has a SHORT WIRE CLIP.Which i feel a non knife person, may mistake more easily for a pen etc.

Allenc your Mini grip is 2 times as wide(the end above the pocket)as the Dodo and has a longer solid clip, sure that would be harder to fool someone.

Guess I'm lucky where I am also we all carry knives of any size, hell a lot of guys keep guns at work, clean them at the table etc.Man every day I give thanks i don't live with the sheeple.

I don't think it was in this thread.

Very much earlier on, I believe it was an initial goal of Mr. Janich and/or Mr. Glesser that the blue would match jeans and be camouflaged.

However... my memory could be rather faulty.

Hi Biogon. Your memory is good. That was the original plan. I even tried to use a piece of denim as the final layer in the G-10 lay-up. But for a variety of reasons, we couldn't make it happen and we'd been so long in getting the model to the market that we decided to go ahead with the available blue.

Any color out of the ordinary is more likely to be caught by the human eye. So the blue G-10 is less likely to be seen as it blends in with blue jeans which are an ordinary thing.

There we go - this was in page one of the thread :) Personally I'm going to get a Yojimbo - blue or whatever. Though I am certainly looking forward to the Spyderco Pikal..... "any one for a pickle?"

Cheers,
Nathan

Mr. Glesser,

Ahhhh... I think THAT would indeed have worked much better. The visual texture might help to offset any color variation across different styles of jeans... interesting idea.

Thanks for the info. I agree... might as well get it out there, as there seem to be enough folk buying the blue Dodo.

Either way, I've got pre-orders in now for a black one. Mmmm.

:)
