Why Bowie gets all the love and not Hudson Bay

The Bowie is a more attractive knife generally. Period.

That depends on who makes it.
I have seen some butt ugly Bowie knives, true abominations.
I have seen a few Hudson Bay knives that were really nice, generally made by custom makers.

But a well-made Bowie does look pretty cool most of the time.

The bowie knife is part American folklore. Hudson Bay is a cold, cold place up north, eh?

The HB knife never got hyped to legend status in its day or since like the Bowie has.

Bowie knives are a pretty big field, so thats a very VERY broad statement.

Im a fan of certain knife types, which we today deem to be Bowie knives, but there at least as many ugly knives called Bowies out there, as there are nice looking ones.

In fact some of the modern 'Bowie' knives, which are sadly influenced by the unfortunate knife in 'The Iron Mistress,' are horrible abominations, which most likely have nothing to do with Mr Bowies Sandbar Knife.

That latter knife most likely shared more elements with the stark simple no nonsense design of the Hudson Bay knife design, as others have mentioned, than with the perception of a lot of people in regards to what a Bowie knife is 'supposed' to look like.

The Iron Mistress syndrome has such a strong hold on people, that a knife owner of just such a modern abomination was able to convince (bully?) the knife world into believing his knife was the genuine thing and once belonged to Mr. Bowie himself. The knife complete with exaggerated curved clown clip, knife fighting strip on spine of knife and of course with suitable 'authentic' inscription sold for an obscene amount of money to a gullible rich entertainer and knife 'aficionado.'

So much ridiculous hype exists in regards to Bowie knives. What do people think of, when the term 'Arkansas Tootpick' comes up in conversation - huge very pointy stickers/daggers, when in fact it was once a term used for Bowie knives.

Ugh....another bowie thread......

Title says it all. Ive been reading about hudson bay knfe and i really think it deserves to be an A list star. It was around alot longer and used by more hardmen than 'Bowie' knives yet gets little press. Just sayin.

And I suppose you personally know these hardmen, right?

It is mostly a fantasy with very little proven fact that means little today and that know one will really know the truth of. Just sayin.

Ah, you typed it wrong.
You obviously meant to say that "In the modern world, a big honkin knife comes in very handy in the woods and at camp, and that's why so many people love them. I carried a big knife when camping as a boy, but was not yet large enough to use it to its full potential."

Damned typos. :D

Maybe it was a typo. I more believe that he does have problems with carrying a big knife. Not everyone can do it. So, the issue is he is projecting his problem with being able to handle a big knife on to everyone in the modern world. The simple way to solves this mistake is to clarify that he was talking about the problem he has and not every other person everywhere in the modern world. Not to difficult. It is this thing we call opinion.

Bowies get love due to the mystique and the cool factor, which the Hudson Bay doesn't have.

In the modern world, carrying around a big honkin knife in the woods are at "camp" is a PITA, that's why Hudson Bay knives are not popular anymore. I carried a big bowie when camping as a boy and it was not practical.

Just because you are incapable of carrying a large knife around camp does not mean everyone else in the modern world is. No need to project your issues on to the rest of us.

Indeed.

I carry this blade camping/hiking on a regular basis - it does stellar service

Actually, there are some folks who choose to carry a small blade from experience and preference. Mileage varies. There is a distinction between can't, won't and don't...

The hudson bay knife has a much more distinctive look to it, almost like a large nesmuk or something. They are cool looking knives. I have the condor version.

What would the internet be without pics. Here are examples of the Hudson bay.

Then there is the Nessmuk style which is very similar. Here is Koster's version

They are very similar and neither looks like a Bowie or traditional style camp knife. They have their own look.

Marcinek, you can't leave until we start to talk about size and value.:D

And Nessmuk didn't use his Nessmuk as a chopper.

Absolutely. I agree 100% that people should do what works best for them

That is not what Mr. Brownshoe stated. He stated that in the modern world a large camp knife is a PITA. He went on to say that it was impractical to him. He is entitled to his opinion but it should be stated as such. Just because he has trouble doing it for whatever reason does not mean that it is a PITA for the rest of the modern world. He spouted opinion as fact. My, and many other people's opinion differs from his, there for it is not a fact for the rest of the modern world.

jim bowie killed a bear with his knife, and won knife fights, one with several attackers. his name carries more pizzaz than skinning animals i suppose.

And Nessmuk didn't use his Nessmuk as a chopper.

Well NEssmuks were never that big, it's only these days that you see huge nessmuks. I like the smaller nessmuk design, you get a very wide blade that has great cutting geometry.
