Why Can't I Keep my Knives?

IMHO, what you do is actually more sane than hoarding them. I find it liberating to jettison the things that I don't use on a regular basis. I am comfortable keeping a five or six knife "collection". Any more than that I start feeling like I'm being excessive. So when I go to buy something new I ask myself if what I want is any better than what I already have. If it is then I am willing to let go of the one that it's replacing. If not then I probably don't need it.

Anyway, that's just the way MY mind works. Not knocking anybody who enjoys owning 50 or 500 or more. Whatever makes you happy.

You're right. Even though I "hoard", it makes more financial sense and is far more sane to jettison those one doesn't use.

But than again, sanity can be overrated.... :D

If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it is meant to be.... unless it was limited production; you may as well kiss that baby goodbye.
:D

I am the same way. Knives I've said I'll always have get sold all the time. The only knives safe are my Sebenza and knives I've been gifted/ passed down threw the family.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, half the fun is finding them/ working the deal out for new ones/trades.

Personally, when I buy a knife for any reason, I consider the money flushed into that black hole that money seems to go to and never comes back out. People are different and it's nice to know that you CAN sell a knife if you choose to. Maybe I don't have to sell knives that I have no interest in owning any more?? It is something that I think about from time to time. My sister can't understand why I "need" so many. All she sees is the money.

I often wonder why a person feels they need to sell a knife to buy another or for that matter, sell a firearm to buy another that caught their eye. My sense of this is that people are subconsciously reacting to the way they were raised whether it be buying in excess (what ever that means) or buying and selling constantly.

I have never sold a knife. Don't really intend to, but I guess that could change at any moment. If I have stuff that I simply have no interest in and someone decides that they would like to buy, then I am probably receptive. But I don't seek this and I generally would sell at about the cost to buy. I don't do bargains. If it's a friend, I'd rather give the knife away.

I'm going to take a page out of powernoodle's book - we buy what makes us feel good, right? We just want to get some happiness whether it's in the hunt, the waiting and anticipation of arrival, the unboxing, or actually carrying and using it. I say if you're unhappy with a knife then sell or give it away.

The only opportunity I have had to actually handle and see knives in person is to purchase them online so if I get one that just doesn't click with me and my usage, then I'm thankful I found a place to pass it on and recoup the cost, or at least most of it. I usually don't mind selling for less than I purchased because I got the benefit of experiencing the knife and trying it out so I look at the "loss" as more of a rental fee and a just cost of the hobby.

I understand the appeal of just keeping all of them but I also aspire to keep a practical perspective on this hobby and my collection and limit what seems excessive to me. It's a very subjective thing so the variety of views in this thread is understandable. At this point in my life, I just have other uses for the funds so I don't like having too much tied up in knives that never get out of the shoebox or house.

I don't sell or trade anything. I bought it for a reason and even if I don't like it it's still a knife that helped me learn from my mistakes and either way I like to collect them so having a little bit of everything wether I like to use it or not is just fine for me every knife that I have and will have means something to me I learned that when I gave away one of my knives and now I regret it but oh well that's just me :D
