Why carry a knife at the gym?

Every now and then I read somebody say they carry a knife while working out. My question is "why?"

I try to work out every day at a gym. Since I'm a single dad, there are days I can't. But I average >5 days a week.

I love knives, but at the gym they stay in my pants, hanging in my locker. I just don't see any self defense or other reasons to have a blade on me at the gym. If I need to cut a thread on my gym shorts or whatever, I can do it when I change back into street clothes.

Not judging. Just asking.

EDIT: I didn't see the "Running with knives" thread until after I posted this. Not a copycat thread, but I guess it is a slightly different question.

Probably because they don't want their knife jacked (my reason) or habit. Sometimes people are just OCD with their stuff :)

I never did till they started having breakins in the locker room on a regular basis.
I ain't gonna have my wallet and a $400 knife get stolen to feed some junky's crack habit, so now my workout pants are cargo pants.

Certainly don't need a knife as a weapon or tool at the gym.

That's something I don't understand either. Not that I see it at the gym often, but a recent thread about what knives people carry when they're out for a run got me thinking about it.

I would carry a lighter knife when I lifted so I could clip it in my waistband without tugging my shorts down. I take a knife everywhere except for federal buildings where it is illegal and airports. I guess it's a habit.

I guess its no different then wearing your watch or carryng your cell phone with you. I do all three. Its just a habit and quite I feel like I am missing something when I don't have those items on me.

If it's a small enough/light enough knife, why not? When you carry something with you every day, everywhere you go, it's hard to break that habit.

I agree. Now that you mentioned it I always carried my phone too. I was always afraid it would fall out of my pocket mid-squat and I'd drop the bar on it or something :D Kinda like how I'm afraid it will go flying out of the car if the windows are open. :D

I agree with this. I wouldn't expect to see someone with an Esee7 running on the treadmill.

I think its all a habit. I mean, I am OCD about checking my phone so it'd be weird to be without it.

I do yoga several times a week as well as lift weights and other activities. Believe me when you're doing yoga you don't want a cell phone or anything else in your pockets. I just wear my clothing and, if lifting, an iPod. Maybe a towel and water bottle, but nothing else.

The gym is "my time" and I don't want to answer the phone. I don't need my keys or knife or any other EDC items while I'm there. Again, if it works for you, fine. I was just asking.

I normally have a knife clipped to my sweatpants pocket while I work out, when I go for a run I'll go stash my pants in my locker and clip the knife in my waistband, normally a thin small knife. Why? Because that's rule #1 - Never go anywhere without a knife.

Neither do I.
But I do need them after, and if they're stolen, I won't have them.

Ok, I get this.

Sometimes I leave my knives and wallet in my car. But I'm inconsistent. Obviously, I need my keys so they go inside with me. I've been lucky to have never been ripped off. And I always lock my locker. But your concern is valid. Sorry your gym has a crime problem. :(

I don't consider yoga to fit in my category of gym. Its an activity. I consider gym something you do without any other assistance or class. For me the breakdown is:

Gym = lifting & cardio

Activities = yoga/swimming/spinning/etc.

I used to grapple 4x/week (can't do it for a while due to medical issues) and I agree carrying a knife/keys/phone/whatever would be highly impractical and VERY frowned upon of not outright banned.

No idea why you would carry a knife at the gym... seems kind of silly unless it is a knife that is connected to your keychain or something. I carry my cell phone only if I am meeting someone there and believe I would need to call them because they are late. However, other than that, I just leave stuff like phones, pocket knife, etc. in the car.... not sure why you wouldn't.

I was surprised when I read on hear that some people sleep with knives strapped to the inside of their legs, etc.... that seems kind of nutty to me as well unless you are sleeping on the street or in a hostel, etc..

Maybe you live in a city and don't drive to the gyn (or, possibly, at all)

Fine. I won't argue the semantics of what "gym" is versus "activities."

I also lift weights often. Honestly, power yoga is one of the hardest and most productive workouts I do, however.
