Why carry a knife at the gym?

Generally speaking, If I'm wearing clothing I have a knife or two on me. I don't work out at gyms much, but when I did the gym I went to didn't have a locker room so I had to carry my keys, ID, knife etc. on me.

You may wish to ask yourself "why carry a knife at all?". For me it would be that I may need to cut something. It's as simple as that.

At the gym?
Can't say I ever saw an excuse to use a knife at the gym in over 10 years of going, and I'm a guy who looks for extra reasons to use my knives (I paid so damn much for them, afterall).

I put it in my locker at the gym, but when I'm out for a run I wear a light folder on my hip.

Knife on me at all times. thats how i roll. different strokes for different folks.

Hi Mud -

There was a fellow at the gym last night sporting jeans, work boots, t-shirt - like he just came off the construction site and started working out. He had a Kershaw Scallion clipped to his pocket.

I always change into workout attire for the gym - but some people just keep on street clothes.

I always leave my knife locked in the truck, since it is usually the most valuable thing I have with me.

best regards-

mqqn

If I could, I'd carry a gun EVERYWHERE I go. But I can't, so I carry a knife everywhere I go. Why, because you never know when you will find yourself in a life threatening situation. I'm not the paranoid type but, can you honestly think of a single public place where you are 100% safe from potential violence?

I just have to use my imagination a little-

Imagine a disgruntled employee coming back to the gym (or wherever) and starting a killing spree. Actually, I remember this happening in a gym not to long ago. I don't remember if it was local, but it was on the news.

Imagine if some womans ex-husband or boyfriend comes to the gym to kill her. And decides to kill a few others while he's at it. Remember that big story a little while ago about an ex-husband who killed all the people in the hair salon his wife was at.

Imagine some guy, wacked-out on steroids, goin nuts for some reason and turning violent. Guys on steroids often frequent gyms.

Imagine if some crooks decide to rob the place. I don't know how much cash gyms keep on hand but some dumb, amateur criminals might see a gym, and it's patrons, as an easy score. And maybe they'll execute everyone just to prevent live eye-witnesses.

These are just a few examples. If I can't carry a gun, I'd carry a knife. I'd carry it in a bag, like a duffle bag, always keeping it close to me.

Fine. I won't argue the semantics of what "gym" is versus "activities."

I also lift weights often. Honestly, power yoga is one of the hardest and most productive workouts I do, however.

I don't disagree that they are exercise and quite productive at that. All I am saying is that certain activities don't lend themselves to having things on your person. Imagine swimming some laps with a set of keys in your trunks.

Ya, I kept mine with me so it wouldn't get stolen. In hindsight it was kind of silly as I left my wallet, phone and laptop in my locker, but ah well. I was young haha

I don't go to the gym anymore but when I did I carried my valueables with me. Too easy to break into lockers.

The knife stays locked up in the car or the gym locker. The same with the wallet and mobile phone. In over thirty years of working out in gyms, of those three items I've only kept my phone with me when absolutely necessary. The gym is my time to put on the iPod, lift and run on the rat wheel.

Same for me, always have a weapon on me 24/7...I also always check around for potential weapons of opportunity and additional exit ways.

While I like carrying a knife at all times, at the gym I keep it in a locker because I am scared that having it be in contact with my sweat for an extensive amount of time will cause it to rust.
However, if it were not for that factor, I would probably keep a knife on me just because I am so accustom to having it close at hand.

oddly enough, I don't carry mine in gyms. Never really thought of it before, but it just seems out of place.

just looking at the title, the thought that comes to my mind is a place where accidents and injuries could happen. a knife that can cut clothes, bandages, wood for splinting, etc will be very handy. and it's not just you, it's everyone around you at risk. during an emergency, being the only guy with a knife will raise your good looks level by at least a few notches. that's from experience.

Ok so I am OCD.

BUT the expression is "one is none and two is one".

Guess y'all dont take that to the gym ?,is there any other place y'all dont take that too ?.

At the gym I have an ankle rig with a VERY light Ruger LCP.

In my pocket is an ultra light folder = Al Mar 4" blade.

And of course my cell phone on me.

I am older and dont exert myself enough to lose or drop any of the tools that I am NEVER without.

Do as y'all please,I sure as heck will.

actually, i like to go around with the thought that, in case there's a need, i'll be the only guy with a knife. it's a happy thought.

NB: you can't do evil if they're happy.

I think a lot is to do with why someone carries a knife.

If someone carries a small knife on them because they believe it comes in handy some times then fair enough.

If on the other hand someone is carrying around a larger knife as some sort of personal defence system then sure that's their choice, but personally i can't help feeling they're both very insecure and extremely ill informed.

Probably get shot down in flames saying this on a knife based forum, but for me knives are simply tools.
If i'm out and about i might take my multitool with me, if i'm hiking i'll take the multitool and a larger folder, if i'm wild camping then i'll take my fixed blade and a wood saw.
For me personally if i'm going to the gym i really really don't want anything in my pockets.

If i'm on call then i'll tend to take a bum bag (fanny pack i think they're called over there) with my phone and keys inside, that way i can just put it down next to me depending on what i'm lifting or exercise i'm doing.

As far being afraid of some disgruntled employee, ex etc i'm really struggling to get my head around how someone can go around being so afraid their entire lives.
Sure stuff happens, but in my experience i've seen trained soldiers under fire in life or death situations unable to shoot at someone, i can't help but think that there are not many civilians that would be able to shot another human being, never mind get close enough to stab someone.

I love using a good knive, using the right knife in the right circumstances still brings a smile to my lips after all these years.
When someone starts warbling on about knives as self defence tools though, i cannot help but think they have absolutely no idea or experience in violent situations this side of seeing Jack Bauer on TV.
