Why choose stag?

Hen & Rooster Small Whittler. These have stainless blades but a carbon backspring. The opposite of CASE's current cv offerings.

Stag is one of my favorites BUT - you almost have to see it and hold ot in hand before you buy. Unlike bone that is pretty consistent, stag can vary great from one side to the other. On German knives ( and other European makers??) they seem to put a nice piece on one side and a reallt plain / smooth piece on the other. I prefer them to be matched as much as possible. I am in the same camp as the others that do not like "fat" stag where it humps up from the bolster and also like to see a photo from the back to judge thickness.

The FIRST Geno Denning Mini GM ever made.

A nice AG Russell pocket knife - This one has nice stag on BOTH sides which unfortunately seems to be the exception.

This #53 Cuban has some gnarly Genuine Stag on it, which means not burnt, colored or altered in any way.

These are beautiful knives guys. I agree with Black mamba. I prefer un-altered stag. Some of the Amber dyed stag is very striking and I like it very much but I just don't care for burnt stag. The colors look artificial and in my opinion it damages the stag. The only burnt stag I currently have is my 2006 BladeForume Canal Street ring opener and on that one I ended up working it over to remove some the orange discoloration from the burning.

Well, if you think stag is "rather ugly" then it's probably not for you. Certainly a large part of the attraction to stag is aesthetics. But aesthetic considerations aside, it is also a good choice for the practical reasons already mentioned.

Me? I think it's rather purty. :D
