Why D2 for the Izula Folder?

I was just wondering what benefits D2 has for the Izula Folder blade over 1095 or even stainless. I know D2 is tough and I believe used on bull dozers (?). Won't D2 rust easily? I know my pocket knives get used/abused/wet often and I don't often coat them in oil as I choose stainless.

So why D2? I know Jeff doesn't have specs but this is one he does have.

Just curious?

My EDC is made of D2 and I have carried it for about 3 years and used for everything from food prep to heavy cutting and prying. It easily takes an edge and holds it well. I only noticed extremely minor rust but no pitting and around the thumb stud where it is hard to clean. I think D2 is an excellent choice in knife steel and takes very little maintenance. This all just my opinion though.

You mention 1095 and stainless--D2 is the middle ground between those; it's near-stainless, so it's in between them for corrosion and toughness.

I heard that RAT was making a stainless knife but in one of the 440's C I think. I like D-2 and have several knives made in it . I would like to asee a serious bush type folder in 1095 just for the hell of it.

D-2 is a good choice. I can see a high-carbon steel blade like GEC puts in their slipjoints. It gives you a great edge. But you do have to maintain it properly. For a daily carry, mixed use folder, a stainless (or semi-stainless like D-2) is a bit less trouble.

I have D-2 knives I've used in my kitchen, for example, a Dozier Canoe and a Camillus CUDA Maxx. The Maxx is a big folder with a 5.5" blade, and never saw corrosion.

I'd prefer D2 to 1095. If you need a folder to be as tough as a real Izula you're doing something wrong IMO.

D2 is semi stainless too, which helps.

My experiences with D2 in the past have been very positive. I love the idea of a RAT folder with it

With the proper heat treatment, D-2 is one of the best knife steels around and it's readily available. It's the perfect choice for this knife.

Why? Because it's awesome. It rivals some of the popular/super steels being used currently and (if I'm not mistaken) it's cheaper.

Well, to me, as long as it is a Rat Cutlery blade, it will be of quality.

The thing is, RAT is really good at working with 1095. But I know (or at least hope) this RAT folder will be well tested before it's released. I can't wait.

I am wondering where you heard it was D2... What thread/link did you pull that from?

I believe Jeff stated that it's the steel they currently plan on using, think it was in the Izula folder thread.

ETA: http://www.ratcutlery.com/izula.htm link from the Izula folder thread.

Well all I saw was you asking if it was D2, and someone  but nothing that Jeff or anyone else said that it was going to be D2. Not that I really care. If it is D2, I'll buy one. If it is 1095 I'll buy two. :)
