Why did Benchmade abandon H-1 Steel?

Umm not sure what this talk of "clans" is but to get back on topic.

BM did use H1 on some of their dive knives way back and switched over to X15. I have both a Spyderco Pacific Salt (H1) and a H2O Grip (X15) and I think X15 performs better as a knife steel. It takes a much crisper/finer edge and holds it longer. I've yet to have any rust issues with either steel. I live in a high humidity environment and only a mile from a saltwater shore and I've also taken both knives on weekend fishing trips to our saltwater bay. I think for practical purposes both steels are plenty rust resistant.

Damn, why is the Benchmade clan always so hostile to the Spyderco clan? Why is the Cold Steel clan so hostile to everyone? Why are the Syderco and Kershaw clans hostile to anyone who asks questions?

Can't we all get along?
I can't speak for others, but I never see BM fans make negative comments on Spyderco knives. it's usually the other way around. :(
I have Spydies in my collection, too. Not as many as Benchmades, but enough to respect the brand.

It wasn't too long after BM quit using H-1 steel when Spyderco launched one of their very first H-1 blades and that being the Tasman Salt hawkbill model. I know that for a fact too because I have one of the very first ones they made with H-1.

The very first H1 Spyderco was the Salt 1 (C88) in Winter 2003/2004 followed by the Pacific and Atlantic. The Tasman (C106) was released in late 2005.

Each of these brands have their own cult, it seems. When X points out something that might be negative (or rather "not positive") about Y's brand, Y complains that Xs are always harping on Y...

And when an outsider questions something about X's brand, all the followers of the X cult jump in and repeat the same thing post after post after post until they drill it into the outsider's head that nobody is to question X's decisions.

Etc.

It's just a trend I have noticed during my time here on BF :)

Well I like 'em all, dammit. Even some of the Gerber stuff. :D

Edit: Oh, except for Mantis.

Because it's boring, okay, One SS knife isn't quite the same as another SS knife for salt water diving.

Got it, no controversy, why try to care, if SPCO has what you want why run to the BM forums and ask the USERS why the COMPANY changed steels?

You seem to be "covertly" complaining about a non-issue, as far as the BM forums, sure, come hang out. Just don't expect us to go gaga over SPCO's h-1 and why BM doesn't use it.

Send a letter to BM if you want answers about steel choices.

Excuse me Sir :) I am in no way, shape or form saying anything derogatory or debased about Benchmade knife company or any of Benchmade's great products. I have a few Benchmade blades myself Sir ;) The Benchmade model 640 & 650 Boguszewski Spike models is one of my top 5 favorite knife designs of all time.

The only reason I raised this question was strictly from a curiosity standpoint and to try to figure why the H-1 issue played itself out the way it did. And I tought one of you guys here on Bladeforums might have had some inside knowledge about it. I even liked the 100S H20 model when I had and even regret selling it ( you would know that if you would read my posts in their entirety ).

And from a marketing standpoint I do think that it's extremely odd that one company would build an entire series of products around that one blade steel while the other company just completely aborted it .

I thought we had the right to free speech here on this forum and in this great country Sir. I have not defamed or disrespected anyone here at Bladeforums including you Sir. I have been a member here going on 5 years and I haven't been skolded by any of the moderators or owners.

This is an open forum to discuss knives Sir. And I got just as much right to talk as you do and if you don't like the content of the discussion that we are having here then just go chat with folks you do get along with. Nobody here is rocking your boat so just relax and take it easy.

Pardon my lack of correct smilies.

I wasn't trying to ride you or get your dander up. :(

What I was saying is that the BM forum has very little interaction with BM, it's a place BM made for the people who enjoy the knives. Simply, I've never seen a BM nut, though I have heard of one, that works for BM. Inside scoops on why a steel is introduced or removed from the line up is left to those who wield crystal balls or attempt to deduce the reasoning.

Oh, and don't call me "Sir" :grumpy:
That's my dads name. :rolleyes::D

You can call me Jon.

Ive got a Boker in X-15 and it takes a super super sharp edge.. I got it in a trade from a buddy and really like it.. I want to get an H1 Spyderco, but Ill substitute this one for now.. I havent abused it, but as an EDC blade it works great..

A H1 710 would be niceeee. I can't answer the question as to why BM switched over though.

This is what I like to hear. A comparison between the two. If it was edge holding Benchmade wanted it might justify their decision to have moved to X15. (They make more PE and CE then fully SE models) I like H1 but still want to give X15 a try if it has better edge retention in PE then H-1.

I remember that the serrated blades in H-1 is high in RC. Close to 62 or something (A thread I read years ago where the RC was tested independently by a user with RC machine). However on the PE does not reach the RC of SE.

Sorry for any misunderstanding Jon :) I guess maybe I could have been more specific in some areas. Also just for your information I am a member of the Benchmade.com Forum and have been for about 3 years now. I used to post there quite a bit and still do lurk there occasionally. I haven't been posting there much lately. However I did put this same question on the BM forum about a year or so ago and nobody there seemed to really know anything much about it . Also I found it strange that as good of a dive knife as the 100S H2O model is that no one on that Forum at the time even said they owned one  I truly would like to get that knife again>> I wouldn't even mind finding a user model of it... I do want the yellow handle though and I do want the H-1 version as well.

Maybe OT but does anyone know how to determine what steel a knife is made of? It could be marked D-2 or ATS-34 and aside from the markings I wouldn't have a clue.

not cheaply, I seem to remember hearing that you could send it out to have it checked by a lab or something.
