Why did they discontinue the G-10 Harpy ?

I'd like serrated, VG-10 and the dark green that's used on the recent Worker.

I didn't get any resistance to a G-10 Harpy sprint. The question presented was what steel to use? Also, what color G-10?

Sal, I'm guessing at least some of them will be serrated and I'm fairly sure you've mentioned that ZDP-189 and serrations don't play well together, so I'd say stick with VG-10.

As for color, dark blue would be my first choice, but orange or yellow might be more appropriate. That said, I can't think of any, other than digi-cam that might be a deal breaker for me.

For Handle colour ; How about Navy blue ?
For blade material ; I think the plain edge ones should be S30V.
The serrated ones should be H1.
If anyone else has a better steel suggestion; please share.

Just Rit Dye the living crap out of it?:D
I'd bet it would still look blotchy. You'd probably have to go with one of the gun coatings, unless you like blotchy.

If Spyderco could convince a Japanese maker to use an American steel, it would be a first. The Japanese are nationalistic to a fault. Splitting a run between two different steels, even if they were two different Japanese steels, probably won't work either.

Is the Harpy a Seki or Moki produced knife?
G Sakai.

How about Using H1 for both the plain edge and serrated models ? Think about it. The biggest market for Hawkbills comes from the marine industry. Being a recreational fisherman , l can attest to that. Now serrated H1 outperforms any other steel in terms of edge retention that l know of. And most Hawkbill users will want the SE version. Hence making them in H1 seems like a sensible choice to me. Now ; l know that plain edge H1 is only as good as Aus-6 in terms of edge holding. BUT most of the people buying plain edge hawkbills are collectors. So edge retention won't be such a big deal to them. Of course ; VG-10 is pretty good too ; But we marine people would really like H1s rust resistance.

The G-10 Harpy would have many parts that are not rust proof. Unless all of the parts were rust proof it wouldn't serve the marine market and we have H1 hawkbill models for that job.

M390! Handle color is more difficult... would need to be something new ... chartreuse? if multi color is an option maybe an urban camo? Not sure what your target market would be. This is fun though!

I would be happy with black G10, serrated hollow ground VG10. I am curious about serrated super steels though... Something that is not too awful to sharpen. How would M390 SE perform ?

Well Mr. Glesser I've heard that VG-12 blade steel is really good stuff>> but I would be content with VG-10, M390 or one of the Carpenter steels if it's made at the GOLDEN PLANT.

I would also love either a Burgundy or Dark Green G-10 handle>> but if it will make it come to pass I'll be satisfied with a black G-10 handle. Sure I would like a nice set of new features but if it has to be VG-10 and black G-10 handle I would be down for two of them if they are available in PE & SE>> yeah one of each please??

I would LOVE a plain edge version in VG10 with dark green G10 and would certainly buy two. Serrations would be a deal breaker for me unfortunately.

Hi JD,

The tooling is in Seki.

Hey Darby,

We would also make some plain edges, at least one for you. :p

Hey Sal.

I would love to see a sprint run of the G10 Harpy, I have two in my collection. Any chance to have dual liners, instead of the single on the earlier runs? Put me down for a couple.

The G10 Harpy was the first Spyderco I purchased. I'd love to see a plain edge in Navy Blue G10.

I'm just here to post pics. :D
