They are basically the same thing made by two different manufactures. 204 is made by Carpenter and 390 by Bohler. It might be easier for them to get steel from an American manufacture vs one from Europe.
Yep. It seems availability of M390 is unreliable at times. As stated, the steels are near identical. It means ZT can make their knives available more quickly, so it is a good change.
M390 sounds cooler. Bohler makes M390, Carpenter make CTS-204P. KAI couldn't get enough M390.
What I've heard is that they are basically the same formula sold by different companies. I've seen tests where 204P has better edge retention, but they weren't the same model of knife.
