WHY do I need a Khukuri?

Hey all,
I'm toying with the idea of getting one of these things, since I like the massive unstoppable force they exude. What do you like about Khukuris? Which one should I get?

Don't even get started. I just bought one, got another a week later, and I'm thinking about what to buy next!
And I wasn't even particularly interested in knives!
Stop now before it is too late.

Summerland, if you're strapped for cash, get a Villager.

Possibly start small with a 12" AK or Sirupati. Not all kukris are barbells, it's a package deal of design, weight, thickness, size IMHO. What would you use it for?

I have a 20" Villager and ideally I would use it for chopping and gardening, it could fight in a pinch but I have other knives for that which I carry.

I think that a Khukri is more than just the knife. A kukri is the land that forged it, the history behind it. A kukri is the religous aspect present with the Sword of Shiva. Whenever I pick up a kukri I cannot help but think of the thousands that have done the same. In war and in peace. A kukri is a piece of steel with a soul, demanding respect but giving more than any other tool could be asked. HI kukris are the best bar none. I own two of them now. I also own several others. If you really want to know more take a look at the FAQ on the HI web site. If you want an opinion as to which one to buy, go with the 15" AK. Great all around knife.

Perhaps a better question would be "why DON'T you need a khukuri."

I think they are a heckuva good deal price-wise, regardless of the fact that Uncle Bill stands behind them completely as far as warranties and returns go.

Your khukuri will be thicker and sharper than any knife you have ever handled before; the men who make them really know what they are doing.

And with Uncle Bill's close local connections in Nepal and stellar customer service, you simply can't lose.

Granted, I am a bit biased...

If you want one that exudes unstopable force get a 20" AK!!

Or a Ganga Ram if you can get one.

It would help a great deal to help you choose a khukuri if we knew what you may have in mind for it's use. There is one for almost every purpose that anyone can concieve of.
I have a dozen or so of HI's khukuri's. As it has been said, "There are none finer."

Khukuri FAQ

It makes no difference whatsoever which one you buy. The reason is simple: you will not be able to stop with just one and will end up as hooked as the rest of us khuk knuts. As with so many other things, once you take that first hit, you're hooked. Like you, I wasn't particularly interested in knives of any kind before I happened to stumble across the HI web page. Now, I spend my days fondling my khuks, figuring out how to pay for my next one, and trying to find new hiding places.

So I was surfing on internet as I'm wont to do, and I came across this site. Himalayian Imports, khukuris huh? Well, I always thought they looked cool, but most were junk. I guess I can check it out.......

Only now do I realize how well that trap was baited!
The khukuri is a wonderful tool, weapon, and link to another world. The villager tells a thousand storys in every hammer mark, and every grain of the wood. No other weapon that I have ever handled has a soul like a khukuri. A friend of mine has many knives and several khuks from other manufacturers, he belives that the villager I own is of a better quality than anything he has! If only he could see the workmanship of a standard H.I.! Alas, I rant... I meant only to say that you will never regret the purchase of a Himalayan Imports khukuri.

Three of the four elements are shared by all creatures, but fire was a gift to humans alone. Smoking cigarettes is as intimate as we can become with fire without immeadiate excruciation. Every smoker is an embodiment of Prometheus, stealing fire from the gods and bringing it back home. We smoke to capture the power of the sun, to pacify Hell, to identify with the primordial spark, to feed on the marrow of the volcano. It's not the smoke we're after but the fire. When we smoke, we are performing a version of the fire dance, a ritual as ancient as lighting. The lung of a smoker is a naked virgin thrown as a sacrifice into the godfire.

Thanks for the comments!
Other than just the sheer pleasure of owning the thing and gazing fondly at it, I was thinking of a knife I could use for medium duty utility work, brush clearing, etc. I really don't have anything in this length/weight class. Of course, I have found that you CREATE uses for knives AFTER you buy them!!

DOOMED,I say,DOOMED!!!! The kid is done for and doesn't even know it yet....
A life of poverty and three tons of steel awaits him.
Summerland, leave this forum NOW, while you stand even a slim chance of having a normal life.

Summerland,

Anybody who spents time outdoors need a khuk. They might not all know it yet.

A khuk along with the accompanying chakma (small steel) and Karda (small blade)in the sheath will put most "survival" knives out there to shame.

For what you describe, you can't go wrong with the 15" AngKhola (AK) or the 16" WWII as a starting point. But as others pointed out, it's slippery slide to wanting one of different sizes and designs. The dreaded HIKV (Himalayan Import Khukuri Virus).

Summerland,

Welcome from a fellow newbie to HI khukuris! The first one I bought was a 20" AK, and at over 3lbs it is a handfull. What a fantastic tool/knife/weapon!! Well, after that I was hooked: I now own a gelbu special, and 12,15,20" sirupatis. My next khukuri will be the 15" AK with a wood chiruwa (full tang split handle) handle, which will be somewhat of a special order. My advice to you is get the unbreakable #1 seller of all khuks---the 15" AK. If you break the blade or handle---EVER---Uncle Bill will replace it, or refund your money, or switch it for another!! In fact, he'll let you switch for no reason at all. Total customer satisfaction, a great forum full fo khuk/knife experts and uncle bill----it doesn't get any better. Good luck!

I want to see a pic of the ganja ram. Where do i look? Is it the one on the web site?

Matt,

Using the search function at the top of the page, type in ganga ram and check the box that says match ANY of the above search criteria. You will probably get more than a few of uncle's posts that contain pix of that khuk. Good luck!

Matt,

The only picture of a Ganga Ram khukuri I know of is in the kami section of the FAQ, under Ganga Ram. If anyone can provide a better picture, I’ll put it in the FAQ.
