Why do many of you hate

Setting aside their awful advertising, their blatant rip-off of Extrema Ratio and the fact that they "just don't get it", the knives are butt-ugly IMO. It's like they took what may have been a decent knife, then ran it through the Uber Ninjafication Design Program.

I could care less about advertising etc.
The problem with them is that they aren't good at
what knives are meant for.... cutting.
They are way too thick. They are prybars. If you want
a prybar then Dark Ops is your ummm knife.

I think it is more than just ridiculus. I think it is offensive and potentially a liability to anybody interested in knives. Ads like Dork Op's are the fuel that drives the ever more restrictive carrying laws of knives. Even worse, some dumbass wannabe gang-member might buy one and actually use it in the manner alluded to in their ads, which will in turn will make the public respond with:"See all knives are weapons and should be banned".

Quite frankly, I think they should be taken to court over their ads alone :barf: . Just my $0.02.
I agree whole heartedly with what you said!!

... :barf: I must know who they think will buy this knife... (mall) ninjas?

smokelaw1: I think you might have a new job waiting
for you in the DorkOps advertising department.

Titanium coatings on blades generally have a high hardness, which allows for less scratching. Whether fine dust or sand sticks to them more or less is debatable, but the two knives I've used with it do seem to stay cleaner.

Dark Ops has justly deserved its reputation among knowlegeable collectors - but the buying public enthusiastic about the marketing and looks will always be there. They aren't too screwed over when they get one - just enough to learn the error of their ways, hopefully. They do get a knife that can function and cut when looked at objectively. The gameboy mechanical styling sure does communicate a lot about the mindset of the owner, tho.

There's a fine line between reputable and ridiculous. If you look to actual military use to help discern what professionals think, you'll get some guidelines that can be very surprising.

I'd been looking for a good tough knife like these claim to be, and I looked at the extreme ratio knives. Does anyone have a good suggestion of a knife, or knives, that has similar specifications to the extreme ratio knives but for not so much money?

Benjamin, welcome to Bladeforums! :D

That's the right question! There are too many good knives available to waste money on overpriced junk.

To begin with, the Extrema Ratio line that DO ripped off is still an excellent choice, although they are expensive. A great line of actual military-use and outdoor-use knives for much less is Fallkniven. Cold Steel has high carbon steel knives that are very inexpensive and perform well.

Then there are military knives from Ka-Bar, Ontario, Ranger Knives, Chris Reeve Knives, and Busse/Swamprat/Scrapyard Knives at a whole range of prices.

All the low line importers copy the leading edge quality makers. Several are mentioned in this thread.

The unusual thing about military knives and military styled knives is that they are usually two completely different categories. Knives in military use are those generally available to the soldier, and often sold at the PX. This means you see a lot of Buck, Spyderco, Gerber, etc. in simple useful designs, like the Endura 4.

Military style knives are a whole different world, ranging from Frost and Cold Steel, thru Extrema Ratio, Strider, Emerson, Ranger, RAT, Busse, ad infinitum. The cheaper versions are sold to youthful, uneducated buyers with no clue what the military really needs in a knife; the better ones sell to knowledgeable users who want no compromises in performance.

The less the ad says about use, the more a knife is considered high quality. Obviously DO talks more than it needs to, like the young guy who needs to put on a front, rather than being confident in who he is.

Can you imagine what kind of nightmare you would be in for if you were carrying a Dark Ops knife, and ended up having to use it to defend yourself? If the district attorney ever saw the Dark Ops website and ads, you would be completely f**ked. Picture the prosecutor reading the DO ads to the jury, then asking you why you chose to carry such a knife. I really hope that the people who bought DO knives keep them at home.

I would never ever spend my money on a Dark Ops knife.

I would not carry a Dark Ops knife if it was given to me for free (not my style of carry knife).

I think their marketing strategy and ad's are over-the-top and laughable.

But. . . . . . . . . .

Who here that has been critical of Dark Ops knives (for whatever reason) has actually held or used one?

(I haven't, and I imagine most who criticize them haven't, either. Not that you need to actually sample a product to be critical of it. Just curious!)

I have never held one, but their marketing smells of Velveeta...

I use knives to cut stuff, not play GI Joe. :D

Freakin classic! I love it! Named after THE original mall ninja, too! :D

Oh, my ringing ears!

Well, this question has been asked before, and I'll give the same answer I gave last time:

I'll admit I've never held one. My disdain for Dark Ops has nothing to do with the actual knives themselves.

It's like if you saw a delicious bowl of oatmeal on the table. If you were able to go back in time and find out that it was dispensed out of the hindquarters of a horse, you probably wouldn't want to eat it.
