Why do men want to go camping???

Damn it, for some reason this thread has given me a strong urge to buy and smoke a nice Latin American cigar.....Thank god my wife has the vehicle....

I put this is W&SS because this is where I spend almost all of my time, if it needs to be moved, then do as you please.......thanks!!!

This belongs in W&SS. It is not off topic. It is more like a mission statement for the forum.

i cant stand drunk campers they are the reason many campgrounds are close to being shut down in my area, not to mention the fact that i want to be in the wilderness to get away from the idiots in the city. That is one reason i only ever go backpacking these days
There is a big difference between an outdoors man appreciating a good scotch or some wine in the woods, and a group of loud idiot suburban teenagers getting f*cked up with alcohol and drugs. If you have a problem with a grown man quietly enjoying his drink and his meal in the woods, then you were probably raised in a barn by Amish.

Just a quick note...Calebklyne said

so I guess that would rule out a grown man drinkin. Also, if you think the Amish don't drink, you are a bit mistaken. Though they don't over-indulge, I have shared a beer with a few...:D

I would think that most of us could tell the difference between a grown man quietly enjoying a good scotch — or whatever other beverage he prefers — and a group of loud, obnoxious drunks. If people want to have loud, drunken parties, have them in the cities. Most of us go camping to escape that kind of thing. I, for one, would much, much prefer to listen to birds chirping than to drunks.

Why do I go camping? To spend time in the outdoors with friends (Male and female), meditate, relax and because I feel most comfortable in the mountains. I practicly grew up in the mountains here in Central Utah so when ever I'm there it feels like home to me.

If my life feels hectic, cluttered and to busy, spending time in the mountains helps me find some peace and realize that I control my life and my surroundings. IE I find my center. Plus it's awesome to spend a quiet evening sitting around a fire with friends talking to one another if we choose to or just listening to the fire and nature around us.

Not that you need credit from me, but you have proved yourself a wise Mod with this one statement.
Most men camp as a compromise. Men don't want to camp - they want to LIVE. They don't want to hike, they want to simply move from one place to the next with all they need to live on their backs. Modern man 'hikes' and 'camps' as a socially acceptable way of being what he wants to be. Men don't want to 'hunt' - they want to kill to live. (No wonder we are pissed off when hunting is challenged.)

Men desperately, and I mean that in all its force, desperately want (I think need) to challenge themselves, to do things that matter, to live where their lives are on the edge of survival, and where decisions need to be made properly or death is a real possibility. However, due to what we have created in the name of ease and relaxation (society) we have neutered ourselves.

Like Thoreau said:

"Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them."

In our current society, most men live their lives inert, emasculated, neutered, and domesticated. They do things, sports, collecting, business, and so on, in the attempt to live the life of testosterone and adrenaline. What camping and hiking is, is the attempt to live our lives by our terms, do things that matter (cut the wood, make the shelter, kill and dress the food...) and live like men... not the feminine men we have become.

I want to forge a blade that destroys the political correctness of modern culture (be honest and true, call people what they want to be called, but don't pussy foot around every subject so that it cannot be expressed at all), the artificial ease and pace at which we live (we make BOB's because we know this security we have is temporary and false), the lack of nature we build, the shoes on my feet that remove me from nature, and the rest of the things that drain my manhood, remove my purpose, and destroy my soul.

In a response, I want to load my pack, pick it up, move out with my family, and live a life that has purpose... It is difficult to do this any more... so I camp.

If I could be so eloquent and succinct. Only when in the woods.;)

Historically, many instances of white people encountering white people in the woods have not worked out well, either. Hopefully, those days are past.

Just thought of another reason men like to go camping: they don't have to put the toilet seat back down.

Whether alcohol, peyote, ganja or otherwise, people have been getting "tuned up" in the wilderness for thousands of years also.

Vision quest, a few too many scotches or otherwise.

So while you may have raised feathers with your tongue in cheek presentation (Don't worry, I got it) the basic thought has merit.

i have no problem with somebody enjoying a drink or few in the woods, but i really hate roudy drinkers that party all night

G'day ratamahatta

I can't express it any better than to quote a very good friend of mine:

"I like to go where the wild things are, so I can get in touch with my inner Neanderthal"

Kind regards
Mick

Clicking on this thread I didn't think I could describe in words why I like being in the woods but that statment pretty much covers it.

camping relaxes me, and helps me clear my mind. i also like it because i can practice skills i know and ones i need to work on. another reason i like it is because i often romanticize about how life was back in the day and i give credit and admire those who lived long fruitful lives.

in short it keeps me in check and grounded.
