Why do people remove prices of sold knives?

Just as the title states im curious as to why so many people in the exchange delete the asking price after selling the knife?
Sometimes when i plan on selling a knife I like to see what they are going for so my asking price isn't inflated or too low.

Guess they figure the price was between them and the buyer and nobody else's business after the deal is done. I agree that it makes it difficult to figure out what the going price range is for a particular knife, unless you watch the sales all of the time, and not just when you are interested in buying or selling.

I do it cus it's what the veterans do. Some remove the pics too and even all the info. Sites like bay and etsy do it too -- remove the final sell price.

I dunno. Maybe so noobs can't be like, 'This one sold for $200, so why are you asking $800 for the same item'? Because that $200 sale thread is 15 years old...noob. Just a guess. Really no idea.

This.

I'm always watching the exchange so I know the ballpark figures but if I need more price info Ebay works well enough.

This was my other guess; some etiquette from the seller since ownership of the knife was transfered.

But then I thought about the large auction sites removing sell prices; not like they care.

Most people remove the prices just because it has become a trend.

The original intent was to keep transactions secret so that the players can take advantage of fellow forum members who don't have the time to constantly monitor the sales subforms to know what fair prices are.

I always leave the price up of my knives, sold or unsold, because it helps to create and maintain a fair and transparent market.

It makes me angry that this forum allows people to remove prices.

i always leave the prices aswell. I guess what others have said makes sense its there thread its between them and the buyer, but i dont see the negatives to leaving it in i always find its best to be as trans parent as possible.

If prices are removed then there is no pricing history that potential buyers can use to know what a knife should sell for, so a seller can bump up the prices and it is harder for people to know that.

The actual sales price is between the buyer and seller. All we know from the sales ad is the asking price. Based on my experience a knife rarely sells for exactly the advertised price. The privacy argument doesn't stand up, frequently things I'm interested in are sold and you can't even tell who the buyer is. Once a seller places the ad then the listing is public, no way to go back from that and magically make it private.

IMO if the prices are removed then that benefits the sellers. If the prices are left then that benefits the knife community. So when a seller removes the prices you can tell which side they are on. A person on these forums quickly finds out that for many of the sellers here knives are just a business, a way to make money. Those of us that are knife enthusiasts would like to be able to see past pricing information. I sell the occasional knife here and always leave the prices in the listing.

This topic again....I've always removed sale prices for a few reasons - 1) it was the norm when I joined the forum, 2) I have never sold a knife for the initial price, so logically, it doesn't seem useful to leave it, 3) I value privacy in the exchange of $$$, 4) IMO leaving my final sale price may betray or hinder another seller's ability to get a fair price for a similar product, and 5) the amount of riff-raff on the exchange increases daily and, like another stated, people will needle you with shameless requests to price match.

Please don't make blanket assumptions about people's motivations because of anecdotal experiences. I've lost copious amounts of money selling my old knives here, but I enjoy it because it provides a venue to pass them on to other enthusiasts.

After reading the last iteration of this thread, I started leaving a message for people to please contact privately for final sale price. Does that adequately remove suspicion? Nobody has contacted me in that regard so perhaps the extra layer of effort is unreasonable. I dunno.

IMO. The “hunter” model had it’s prices removed because in 10 years time the same “hunter” model from the same maker is WORTH MORE. These guys aren’t a factory pumping them out adjusting for inflation. It’s a craftsman that is 10 years better at producing that “hunter” model. They remove the prices so customers don’t expect the same pricing because the product is worth more now.

The other issue is: leaving the asking price can be misleading and actually give a false sense of what the true selling prices are. I frequently buy and sell knives on the Exchange for less than the last posted price.
