Why do people remove prices of sold knives?

Having the prices listed at best would give you a range, but are still pretty useless for all but the most popular knives, and those you should be able to figure out for yourself. Each sale is unique based on the motivations of buyer and seller. Do I need to make a mortgage payment. Do I really want one and can't wait. Makers fall in and out of favor as do models. Supply and demand plays it's part-even popular brands aren't always readily available on the exchange. Lastly-what did it really sell for. Sure there are those that inflate prices, but there are also those that would game the seller by what they paid, which is no longer a factor and the most annoying form of low baller. In the end sellers are going to sell for what they want and adjust if they can't. My worse miss was a knife I knew what the guy had paid and couldn't pay him the mark up.

I do take the prices out so there isn't any confusion latter. Is it that annoying-No, but it does make the thread clear. I have had people inquire about sales with no less than 3 Sold placements, one at the top, one bottom and one beside the price. They seem to get it if they can't find a price.

Anyhow that is at least part of my opinion-I could go on
It really doesn't matter one way or the other to me, but I can't see why people think it would be greatly beneficial.
and if any think I say this so I can make lots of money on sales, I will gladly trade my gains to you if you pay my losses. But please don't hang yourself afterwards.

As a Gold member, you are allowed to post threads asking about the valuation of knives.

Paid membership has its perks. ;):D

Hi AntCaps -

I am particularly surprised to see how many veteran members are participating in this topic, which has literally been beaten to death over and over again.

When I am looking for the price on something, I typically will look on Ebay and use the "sold listings" filter to see what things have actually sold for.

For instance, I used the following link to see sold listings for the knife you are looking at -

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=MK4 Kwaiback&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1

Not too many of what you are looking for, just a couple. Sometimes you just have to ask some people who know.

Since you are a Gold Member (doesn't sound right, does it? ) here, you can ask people what they think the knife would be worth, and then, you know, grain of salt and all.

Good luck!!

mqqn, good to see you around!

Here’s a fun solution, post this instead of your price once your kinfe ;) sells.

All the arguments for removing the prices are weak nonsense. Such as the claims of harassment weeks or months later: If you put SOLD next to the price, it has no reason to happen, ever. That is exactly the caliber of argument in favour of removing the price.

And you know this based on experience from all the knives and gear you've sold here?

Except you've never sold anything here.

I have had people email me years after having sold the knife. A few times at least. I wouldn't call it "harassment", but it's certainly irritating and eye-roll inducing. They'll even ask where they could find one, like I'd have a clue beyond their searching that led them to my 7 year old FS post that I marked it SOLD..

I don't remove my prices (I cross them out and/or change the color) and mark them SOLD but that doesn't stop the occasional hopeful idiot from emailing me. I don't sell much or often, and if it happens to me, I can only imagine how frequently it happens to people that regularly sell stuff.

People like to remove the price because if you allow them to express their natural cheapsakeness, they scramble to act on it.

Gaston

I have no clue what you're trying to say here.

It shows the supply and demand of the knife community. It does nothing but help ALL of us here to show prices. However, I understand that Transparent pricing shows certain things about us that we may want to keep private. It can show that some of us have a lot of disposable income to spend on their hobby or how desperate one may be to get that grail or embarrassing to show how much they paid for that finger spinner or hot knife at the time. I am sure there are many reasons to not list the price but please don't do it because everyone else was doing it.

I choose to always keep my prices up after the items have been marked SOLD and have never had anyone question it's availability afterwards. I have sold a bunch of things here on BF (and hundreds on ebay) but not a lot like others out there. So my selling history does not span back too far.

I have had jobs where I have to answer a ton of emails all day while at the same time, I have a job to do as well. If I have to answer 1-2 messages a day on BF, it is really not a bother. I'm on this forum for fun so I have no problem helping a knife noob if they have a question.

The price listed isn't necessarily the price it sold for.

Knowing the market is earned through time and effort. Those who know the market get what they want at a better price. The savings realized is the reward for the time and effort invested.
