why do people want blade coatings with little reflection?

It's a lot like heavily tricked out AR-15's you see all over the web - most important thing is that it looks very cool, can have some good use for a small percentage of users but usually unnecessary.

The counterfeit Cold Steel Counterpoints with black blades look pretty nice.

You all missed the point of the coated blades completely. By having dull black coated metal and flat black scales it insures that when you lay it down almost anywhere it disappears and gives you an excuse to buy yet another knife.

Brilliant! ...I'm buying black matte carpetting for all my floors, just for that very reason. i'm tired of hiding my knives, to have an excuse, lol

Couldn't the same thing be said about people who spend $200+ on a knife? Completely unnecessary, from a utilitarian point of view. ;)

Some knives just come that way so if one likes that model and steel ect and it happens to come with a coated blade then well....

EXACTLY!! Well said Ankerson. I don't really care if it is satin, black, or stonewashed, as long as it is not bead blasted.

I think there are several very valid, non-tactical reasons to appreciate blade coatings. Protecting the steel from rust is one, aesthetics another. Would be nice to see more manufacturers go with colors like tan or green or grey than black though.

ive had a bunch of black or coated blades, some i liked that way like the esse 4 tan i had, cool color and helps with rust. Most often though ive chose a black blade because there wasnt an alternative uncoated version available at the time i bought it. pure and simple. the pacific salt i got last spring, all black. on sale there was only black or serrated left. so i got black, my zt0300 same thing, got it and there wasnt a bare blade version, i still dont think the 300 series comes with a bare blade. the painted or coated ones more often than not i will strip eventually as the coatings get ugly with use pretty fast. i stone washed a couple but overall i prefer a polished blade to anything else. a brushed look is also nice, hides scratches.

Brilliant! I never looked at it that way before. I usually like to put orange fobs on my knives to help me find them, but all this time I've been sabotaging a good excuse to buy more knives.

I like mirror polished blades because I like shiny things, so I don't really look down on people who like the coating for aesthetics.

I dislike blade coatings and I dislike parkerized finishes on firearms. It is a turnoff for me. IF I have a choice, I always choose the satin or more traditional blade finish. Every coated blade I have owned gets more marked up due the the coating wearing. I think it a cost reduction measure that has simply caught on. I have no need to imitate special ops weapons. Plain vanillia for me.

I like the line of kitchen knives that are coated lime green, red, blue, yellow, pink and I think purple.

If manufacturers could make the finish last on EDC blades, I'd be all over them, heck even if it wears like BMs BK1 coating I'd be happy.

I like the contrast, I like space age technology like g-10 and I wish it came in more vibrant colors.

Black coating protects my knives against corrosion. I used to carry a D2 Nitrous Stryker, but the area around the thumb stud started rusting within 3 days. Same thing happened to my Emerson Cqc7, but within 2 weeks time. Yes, the coating of my 0200 probably makes it harder to slice paper... but for delicate stuffs i'll use my ffg delica. Different knives have different purposes.

I started looking at some knives like they were nickel plated cheap semi-autos, but I'm going with, "Zombies are attracted to shiny things."

Personally, I couldn't care less what most people think or say on this issue. Most coated blade resists rust, and most look better in general.

Those who think their speacial because that would never consider a coat blade don't me $&%@ to me. I love coated blades, and not because people can't see my knife in the dark; but, that is an added bonus too. I like the fact that it I have my knife open in public, people are less likely to realize i have a knife than if it's shiny.

They look better, and rust less. The first part in opinion, the second if fact.
I think those who only consider poished, flahsy blades think too much of their knife a jewlery. I have a few uncoated blade, and there isn't one I wish wasn't coated. Coated blasde are functional. Uncoated blades are decorative.
Most guys hate a black blade, but the love one in pink or "toxic green".

I'm not even going to bother with this one, but thanks for the laugh.
