Why do prices get removed after sales?

Why does everyone on BFC remove the prices on their listings after they are sold? I was looking through another knife forum the other day and they had a rule saying that the prices had to stay even after the sale, which I think is a great idea.
When I'm browsing the exchange looking for a cool knife to waste money on, if I find something I'm not familiar with, I'll google it to figure out what the prices are, what people are selling it for, if it's cheaper elsewhere, etc. I almost bought a knife here for nearly twice the price I paid elsewhere for the exact same knife. That works fine sometimes for knives currently in production, but what about discontinued knives? Some discontinued knives can't be found at knife dealer sites, so I have no way of finding out whether or not the asking price is fair. By asking but not requiring (or maybe forcing), sellers to keep prices on their listings, it helps establish a price point for later sales. I don't see why this isn't already a rule or suggestion at least. Please tell me if I'm not seeing something here, but I honestly can't see how it would negatively affect the seller or BFC for people to leave their prices up after the sale.

Thanks for listening,
Greg

Hi Greg,

This has been discussed so very many times before. You're going to get all kind of opinions as to why or why not the prices should be removed. The most direct and accurate answer to your question is simply because the seller isn't required to leave the price. It is their prerogative as the seller to leave the price or remove it. Until there is a rule that compels the seller to leave the price, you'll see this choice exercised in different ways. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting on such a rule. :)

Long story short is the seller's prerogative to leave the price up or not. People like less rules not more.

The vast majority of people here remove their prices. I don't understand why. I get that it's their choice, but why remove it? It doesn't hurt them to leave it, and it benefits others. There doesn't have to be a rule, but maybe a polite suggestion saying, "hey, it would be helpful if you left prices up after the sale, but it's not required."

Yea,I agree. There are a lot of knives I really like and have no idea what price range they are in. It really helps to know in advance when you are trying to get some money together for a particular knife......

There are thousands of members here, not jut a dozen or 2. The answer was explained already by several people. I short, search the forums (link in my sigline) for more threads like that if you are interested, the owner wants it the way it is.

That was my thread that you were referred to in Esav Benjamin's post. Apparently the bottom line as to why this is not required, is that the forum owner does not want it so. His house, his rules.

I leave the prices up in my "for sale" threads as a service to others who are looking for info. When I buy something and post "I'll take it," I copy the first post or the pertinent part of the thread to my post so the info is still there. It's a little harder to find but it's still there.

That's a real good idea because, while the seller may want his privacy, if something goes wrong with the deal, I would want his exact words still available.

That is a good idea, and something that I'll probably start doing too. Thanks for the advice. :)
Just to make sure, there aren't any rules saying that I, as a buyer, can't post the price I paid, right?

It let's you know right away this one is sold.

I think that the best way to let people know that a knife has been sold is to put "SOLD" into the title, and to put "SOLD" in red, on the first line of the post. Editing the post is easy, just hit the "EDIT" button at the bottom of the post. Editing the title requires that you hit the "ADVANCED" button. That way when someone is searching for a knife they don't have to read the entire thread, hoping that the knife is still available, only to get to the last post, and discover that it's been sold.

These searches are sometimes complicated by people praising the knife, "Beautiful knife," or the price, "This one won't last long," or by people wishing that they had the funds, "I wish I hadn't just bought that _______ so I could get this one." I've think that such comments should be made in PM's so as to not clutter up the "for sale" thread. Pertinent questions about the knife, blade steel, thickness, etc. belong in the thread if the info hasn't been supplied, but extraneous information should be avoided.

Some people think that the price is a matter of privacy. Some people remove the price so that it won't influence future sales.

I agree with that too. It would be nice if more members put sold in their title once all the items were sold.

♫It's my thread and I'll do what I want to....♪ :D

Really, I prefer to edit sale posts if for no other reason than to avoid necroposts, pm's, vm's and emails asking if it's still available....

I'll put "all gone", "sold" and lock the thread.

I've still received the above if EVERYTHING wasn't removed.

I also delete a lot of pics from my photohost, and there's no point in having a bunch of dead links in a post.

I also like to somewhat altruistically think that this helps preserve some bandwidth for the forum.... :D

It would indeed be nice if ALL sellers would police their posts, but you know how the saying goes - "Wish in one hand and...."

What you fail to realize is that on posts with more than one item for sale that it is impractical to put "sold" on the title.

? Unhelpful. NRA member?

Transparency is desired in most marketplaces. Paranoia is desired in this one.
