Why do the Topics seem so BORING?

I think that most forums consist of about 90% drivel. I have even contributed some pretty meaningless and thoughtless comments. To find the meaningful stuff, you have to sift through the ****. That is fun somedays and work on other days. I guess for me it depends what side of the bed I get up on. There's my worthless comment on another pointless thread.

Geez Dave, I've never in all my days heard the term "Classy" used in refrence to the Bronks! If you believe that even for a second, then Wharton NJ must be the Armpit of the Universe!

PS. I'll see you next Empire meeting.

And yet another example of how truly desperate we are. http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001366.html

Seriously though, we are a bunch of guys/gals who spend our spare time discussing knives ad nauseum with people we've never met (mostly) in an internet forum. What are you expecting, dinner theater?
smile.gif

In the first couple of months I found every thread very interesting. Now it is where I am opening fewer and fewer threads. And anyone who complains about the flame throwers, the trolls, the Kysa's and Dr. What'shisnames, are fooling themselves....much the same as the people who go to auto races think they are there to see the race..... in reality they are there to see a wreck!!!

smile.gif

That is what it has become, between the new knife releases where we can all drool, and the community forum where Vampire Gerbil, Waxes, Paracelsus and others make me laugh and think...... I am looking for the wreck. Who will be the next to stick his/her foot in his/her mouth? Who ripped who off, who should you stay away from, or get to know better? Where is so and so, and just who is going to clean up this mess???

I can tell you, it's not me

I think there's some truth to what David MCMLXVII is saying. Looking in the archives, it seems to me that many of the most passionately debated threads of the past were devoted to discussions of knife A or steel B which displayed certain mythical or magical properties. While the stories of grandpappy's old hunter that could dress out 50 deer and still shave a hair were certainly entertaining, they strained the limits of credibility. Now that folks like Cliff and Mike have developed such scientific methods of testing (and often debunking) these claims, the products in question are forced to stand on their own merits. And, because of the nature of this particular forum, we all learn along with them. Take for example the most recent Mad Dog thread. Granted, it still generated over 90 posts, but for all that there was very little in the way of fireworks, and we didn't see more than four or five posters attempting to justify the price/value of those particular products. We've seen the data and we know better. Perhaps these phenomena, as interesting as they were, are the necessary casualties of our journey to enlightenment.

Now, who's ready for a moderated debate between Brian Edgington and Jerry Hossom on the pros and cons of Wootz damascus?

Hey PhilL,

This is really offensive because you're suggesting that knifeknuts are boring people. I think you should shut up before someone slaps you down.
smile.gif

OK, I'll suggest three topics. Anyone may feel free to re-post these as new threads:

1) Here in California, the knife laws are too lax. I for one would have no problem with having all knives registered with a 3-day wait.

2) Mike Turber is running this forum to rip us all off.

3) What do you think of the fact that Tim Herman steals his designs from Lynn Griffith?

LLLLLLLet's get ready to rrruummmbble!!!

ROFLMAO Glen! Great topics to "liven" things up a bit, eh?

Good show!

ROTFLMAO, Glen! So you're not the only one who noticed that Tim Herman just happened to come out with the Sliver, which just happens to have a wharncliffe blade, around the same time that Lynn's Sniper appeared in the July 99 Tactical Knives!

We need some new miracle products or activities to liven things up. Knives are basically rather simple objects. Fixed blade knives have no moving parts and folders only two or three. You can't put a supercharger on a knife and take it to the drags. It is even hard to arrange good competitive sports with knives.

As totally impractical as it is to cut up a car with a knife, it is at least entertaining. Maybe we need to have some races. Take a standard surplus car body, say a 1975 Toyota Corona, and see who can reduce it to pieces that fit through a one foot diameter ring the fastest.

I heard everybody ripped off Lynn Griffith because he invented the wharncliff blade.
As far as royalties go nobody has paid him a cent.
One more thing, sebenzas suck and only a fool would buy one.

Darn right! Just the other day I saw the exact same knife (except it was called "Sebensa") for sale on a corner in Chinatown for $9.99! I put it next to my Sebenza and couldn't even tell the difference! The vendor said it was made by the same guy who makes the Sebenzas, but he got a special deal. Man was I stupid to pay $325!

Folks,

We have probably grown too big. Everytime we try to have a interesting conversation the background noise ends up making it to cumbersome to make it worthwhile. Soon we may need to sort ourselves into some sort of organization to make this virtual club work.

Usually, when organizations get this big (6K members) they sort themselves into local chapters or committees, and then leverage their mass to sponsor interesting projects.

If we were to sort ourselves geographically, our local chapters in each town would be able to sponsor local events and the local organization would serve as a resource for the rest of the forum. Want information on a Spanish Navaja... Just forward a note to our chapter in Spain; Japan you say, well guess....

The Badeforums is still a young organization. Be patient, sit back, and give a little time. We have yet to begin to leverage our potential. (this is going to be fun

Sebenzas do suck,I agree. So do the knife makers that dont use the traditional"FORGING WITH 10% OR LESS STOCK REMOVAL" ways of making knives.HA,how you like them pork chops!?!?!
This topic has nothing to do with knifes and I think it should be slammed shut....wa wa wa wa CRY CRY CRY BOO HOO

Hey phill
I think its kinda like self induced manic depression. Were just in a down side. Its just really hard to follow up on two or three weeks of having every thread have the guy that offered up blow .... oops I mean Ghillie suits for everything from knives to houses. Then there was his inquisition, the criminals public display and subsequent hanging. Whew how the hell do you follow up. Interesting stuff. Hasnt been a damn locked thread for a while now. BORING !!!

NOT EVEN A MADDOG thread was enough to induce trouble !!!

You are wrong Jaybird, this thread has everything to do wth knives. Because we few KnifeNuts here at BladeForums are the Keepers of the Flame. As BF goes, so goes the World of Cutlery. If we're boring or fail to inspire the Makers, Manufacturers, Dealers, Collectors, Buyers and Newbies, then who else will fill the breach? Huh? WHO? The Knife Collectors Show? I think not! You had better check yourself in the Moonlight, Dude!

You can take that to E-mail! Or better yet, I'll see you in IRC Chat tonight, and bring your raisin sharp wit with you! Harumph!

PhilL; I would have thought that you would never be bored with all those movies around!

Regarding newbie questions, well, I asked them myself when I was one. Of course, since the forum was then new (run by something called ENIAC, IIRC), there was no way to do a search (without all those cards with retangular holes in them). So, let's all remember when WE were newbies.

However, to stimulate your fading gray cells, Phil, I have posted a few reasonably challenging questions on the bladesmith forum. One is on the avidity of carbide formers, the other on the passivation of stainless steel. So there. :P

Ahhhh...the good ol'days. Back when there were only two or three hundred of us.
smile.gif
With 6000+ people you would think we would have at least 500 great topics. If not more. Does somebody have a formula to figure the ratio of "good" topics to members. Something with some "x" and "y's".
I can see it now...5 years from now with over 30,000+ members, we'll be chatting in "HOLO DECK MIRC", remebering the days when you had to sit at a "keyboard" and type what you wanted to say. Back when you had to sharpen you knife on a "Sharpmaker 204", not let the robotic "Sharpmaker 5000" sharpen it for ya.

Phil,Tom,Rich_T and the chatroom crowd,

After thinking really hard about this problem for a good 24 hours I have come to the conclusion that I have absolutely nothing relavent or interesting to say at all concerning this topic. YAWN

Well J, ya did the best you could. 24 hours and you come up with Zilch! That sure is going out and losing one for the Gipper. How does nd E for effort sound to you?

Well...

How do you determine the quality of a Damascus steel blade. Do you "unwrap" it and measure the linear feet of steel?

Just what is the proper way to take apart a Damascus steel blade? I mean you're going to have to clean between those layers sooner or later!
