I was at the local walmart today, tomorrow is our rifle season deer opener, and there were a couple gentleman there looking for a couple of good knives.I showed them the 110 ,and they took a look at the sheath and said no way,it comes with a nylon cheap sheath ,we want leather.Even the 119 had a nylon sheath, they along with many others i'm told want a leather sheath, not these nylon jobs.It just looks "cheap" they said.Anyway, why the change???I don't care for the nylon either...

i would guess it it cheaper for walmart to buy them with the nylon vs. leather. on the scale that walmart buys a few cents saved per sheath in the end can be big money. just my two cents.

I believe they are Cordura sheaths and not nylon. Those Cordura sheaths are actually pretty nice to have in the field. I keep one attached to my backpack.

I do prefer a leather sheath when I'm dressin' up though. :)

The cordura sheaths aren't a Walmart exclusive. Other retailers carry 110 that come with them also and I believe it's to keep the price point down. If you order a 110 from Buck's custom shop, the cordura sheath comes with it at no extra cost, but a leather sheath will cost you an additional $5.

The cordura sheaths are actually very nice, can be carried horizontally and are washable.

It seems that even Buck can't decide what to call them. In the Custom Shop they're called "Black Cordura", but in the catalog, they call them "Black Nylon".

Just my opinion but the sheath doesn't make the knife. If a person won't buy a 110, perhaps one of the best knives ever designed because of the sheath then they aren't really onboard with that purchase in the first place.

Well, Duh!!! What a pair of aces they were.

Look around you, geniuses.......you shouldn't need a GPS to tell you you're in Wal-Mart!

:D

You should have referred them to the Buck website.

It's my understanding that walmart strong-arms their suppliers to manufacture in china or they won't do business with them. I was amazed that the 110 sold in walmart is still made in USA. That's part of the 1% of goods still made in USA that they sell.

So true, but there is a simple solution for those gentleman. They can go to one of the Hardware or knife stores and pay $66 (retail list) for the same knife with a leather sheath. ;)

Brother Plumberdv speaks the truth. Its better to have the option of a $29 Walmart Buck 110 (if thats what it still costs) in lieu of a more spendy Buck 110 somewhere else. One may say no thanks to that option, but at least its there.

I agree. When I picked up a Walmart 110 a while back I also thought the sheath was a little chintzy. After using it, especially in horizontal carry, I found I really liked them. I'm really loving this sheath for 112 / 422 sizes as well.

I like the padded nylon sheaths for storage as well as carry. For one, they can take a ride with the laundry for cleaning.
And for storage purposes they don't turn the brass green if you put the knife away for extended periods.

all this talk about walmart 110's and i had to go get one. $34.97 plus tax. i think im going to try to customize this one.April 2011 001.jpgApril 2011 002.jpg

Our local national chain sporting goods store (sorry, already dinged for deal spotting!) has them for $28.95 during hunting season (now) and they have the nylon/cordura/fabric sheath. According to the guy behind the counter, most of the guys love the n/c/f sheath as it is easy to clean if you get some blood and guts in it, an it is just about impervious to wear. Makes sense to me, especially if you took the knife camping, etc., fishing, etc., and it was exposed to all manner of the elements and nasty cutting chores. The sheath would need nor more care than the rest of your ballistic gear.

In a hurry to clean up after a cleaning session, I left a small bit of blood and guts on a knife and put it away in a leather sheath. That sheath stunk for a couple of years after that, and I was afraid to eat off that knife after I did that to the sheath. Putting a fabric sheath in the washer with my jeans after I found the culprit would have saved all of that smell.

At the sporting goods store price, I would assume one could pay the $29 bucks, then go to a gun/knife show and get a leather sheath that would really dress it up for another $5 - $10, and still be ahead of the game. Or you could get a genuine Buck leather sheath for the Sunday go to meetin' and wedding days at Amazon for $10.75.

Or as pointed out, go to the local gun shop and pay $66 and get one sheath.

Sounds like it's all good to me. After fighting with the leather sheath to keep it from turning my Browning folder green every time I don't carry it, I would certainly look at the fabric sheath. I grew to hate the leather sheath that came with that Browning, as the brass snaps turned green the grommets turned green, and no matter what I treated with or how I cleaned it, it never stopped. Like the fabric replacement sheath a lot, though.

Added: Just checked "the right store, the right price, XXXXX" and they have now changed the online version to include a leather sheath at the 28.99 price!

This is sarcasm, right?

The only thing Wal-Mart "strong-arms" their suppliers to do is keep possession of their merchandise until the last possible second to minimize Wal-Mart's shipping, insurance and inventory-carrying costs.

Wal-Mart has made their immense fortune off the broken backs of American workers whose jobs have migrated to China and other places due to corporations like Wal-Mart.

Any American worker who buys at Wal-Mart is cutting his own throat.

But.....we've all known that for years, right? Haven't we?

;)

There's a rumor (emphasis on RUMOR, see my profile for why the emphasis) going around that wallyworld won't stock Leatherman anymore because they refused to move to the Chicoms. On another note, I was in there yesterday, killin time, and if you look, you are starting to see more "made in USA" stampings in the aisles
Like em sharp- It's no rumor. The Spyderco Native was designed specifically for walmart, and they won't stock it anymore because it's made in America.
