Why do we all love Atwod tools SOOOO much?

Glad to see I'm not alone, I don't see the need for them, not one of them. They appear to be gimmicky and the whole check the web page constantly, or enter the lottery, or..... Sorry but my time and money are too valuable to put up with a hassle when I'm trying put money in your pocket. That is just insane, kinda like another company that will remain nameless.

To that end Atwood did make one knife that I would like the UFO, but he made only one and it sold for like $1,200.00 on Ebay and nobody knows where it went at least not that I know of. Kudos to him (Atwood) he has created a cult like following of people who go to great lengths to pay big money for small tools that aren't really all that useful. Way to go Mr. Atwood, in truth I'm jealous.

I have an original Prybaby that I paid somewhere around $25-35 for. I have found it useful as a prybar, screwdriver and bottle-opener and it has come in handy many times over the years. It travels in my carry-on gear and I have never had any problems getting thru Intl. Airports.

Just checked the prices online... I wouldn't pay what he's asking for nowadays.

Too expensive, rather spend that money on a knife. The twenty dollar PocketToolX Brewzer works just fine for me.

I noticed that you can by the whistles for $40. I haven't found the $400 model.

Yep ,the prices are higher than I can justify for buying all of them, but so are many knives I want.

I think it's like others have said: needed or not, Pete's stuff is definitely art.

BTW, most of his regular items are $35-$50. I paid $10 for a Gerber artifact. Similar concept, but made of aluminum. Handy tool, but I would have rather bought the Atwood, had I thought about it at the time. (Still will once my unplanned employment vacation ends).

Guy jewelery for sure.

They're cool little gizmos, but I just can't justify the cost at this point and it doesn't have the "it" factor to me that would make me go out and spend all that money. Maybe someday.

What he said.

I've had it on my keychain for 6-7 years now, and it has helped me out of many jams, literally. It popped the latch on a stuck door by wedging between the door and frame and scooting the latch back. Many bottles, plenty of staples, screws and the occasional soda can. Helped reverse the doors on a fridge by popping out the hole plugs. Pried up several paint can lids.

Are there other tools which may have done the jobs better? Probably, but I wouldn't want to have to carry a Screwdriver, prybar and bottle opener in my pocket, with this little thing taking up so little space on my keychain.

Almost forgot. It also does a great job of scraping the magnesium bar on my keychain for firestarting.

Cool gadgets, but I probably would never buy more than my one little PryBaby.

Lol at the contrast between the title and thread content.

I just, given the popularity of Atwood tools (except here I guess), can't believe the response this got.

On a site where people will drop 500+ on a knife, so much bitching about $40 for hand made, quality steel gadgets blows my mind.

I like the look of most more than anything. I guess they're my Busses. No, wait, even Pete's tools aren't that ridiculous.:D

Where are these $40 prybaby's you keep referring to? Or, really, any of his cooler toys? They all seem to start around $80, from what I can tell. Even the -really- small ones are $55-60.

I did want one of his tools for a long time and finally picked one up on a trade. Haven't used it yet. Used my CountyCom prybar all the time but not once with the Atwood. And I also would like to see the $40 dollar gadgets. I will even settle for the $80 gadgets. Most I have seen run between $100 and $150.
As for justifying spending big bucks for knives and griping about the Atwood prices, most of us (I know I do ) use our blades on a daily basis. Not everyday that one needs a 1 inch prybar or a hard to hold scredriver imo.

I think all the Atwood love is on the EDC Forum. :) Personally, I've been a fan of his pocket tools for years. Before the craze was in full effect, you could actually call him or email to place an order for whatever piece you wanted. You could even request "like this, but with these extra grinds". I'm surprised at the responses in this thread too. I've been a knife guy for years and just assumed pocket knives and tools go hand in hand. I've never bought any of the big ticket stuff, but the Prybaby and some of it's brethren are just plain cool. This is one of my favorites (with a Farmer, which everyone loves).

I have always thought of Atwoods stuff as overpriced, nothing a SAK or Leatherman won't do for less money.

I saw a prybaby and thought it was a neat tool. One look at the price convinced me it was a wanted tool but not a needed one.

None for me, thanks. I've got better things to waste money on. I could never see the usefulness of them.

I'm sure they come in handy once in a while. About a handy as a cork screw on a SAK. I don't need either.

You're correct, but still far below the $400 tag everyone keeps referring to. BTW the whistles in SS are only $40, and the ring tool thing is $35.:)

I don't love Atwoods. I think they are extremely overpriced keychain toys.
I bought one of these when I thought I needed an Atwood tool.

I've pried with it about 3 times in 2 years. I'm glad I didn't spend Atwood money to figure out how little I need a prybar on my keychain.
On the other hand, the x-acto blade has come in handy, as has the bottle opener.

 Not a fan either. I've flipped a few at opportune times, so I have handled and considered them.

However, there are plenty of other obscure, limited-availability, overpriced doodads that I am into. :p
