Why do we buy duplicates?

Really - it must be pure gluttony. I mean, I can understand Buck 110's being addictive... that's a great classic knife. But, basic models, not Damascus bladed, etc goodies. Okay, belay that - that doesn't even make sense - unless you are really careless and lose or break them regularly. I bought my share when WallyWorld had them in the Christmas tins on closeout for $8, that's for sure. I guess what worries me are the big buck knives. The BM 630 Skirmish - a favorite - deserved a twin... so when I found one - LN - priced right - it came home with me. Now I am looking for a 'spare' BM 755 MPR... does it end? I had to hurry to WallyWorld to buy another Spyderco S30V Native when they were running out - a $40 spare. But - today found me grinning like a Cheshire cat as I bought a second ZT 0551. I can't imagine wearing it out... great EDC, however. I have four Case slippies - three are the same model - different scales - I guess they don't count.

I guess what really worries me are the two CRK folders I've found some way to buy in the last year. Am I destined to buy several Sebbies? How? Seriously, how do you guys contend with this needless duplication?? Is it a real problem?

No matter - I love that ZT 0551.

stream of consciousness?

I dunno. I have no two knives that are exactly the same.

I don't have any duplicates, I don't see the need. I try to take care of my stuff...I imagine that when one of my EDC's starts to wear out I will replace it with the same model, but newer. Granted, my EDC's are more inexpensive than what other guys carry. I carry a tenacious with me everywhere, and a slippie or two. *shrugs* I am utilitarian with my knives, I buy them to use them. I don't buy them to satisfy the urge to buy something.

If it makes you happy, buy a backup. So long as you can make ends meet and pay the bills/not piss off the old lady who cares if you buy backups or not. I don't feel the need to, so I don't. You feel the need to, so you do :) When I feel the urge to buy a new knife, I tend to wait a month or two and see if that urge is still there. If the urge is still there, then I know I might actually *need* it as opposed to just wanting something new and shiny. For me, the wait is half the fun.

The only "backups" I have are for the SAK that I use all the time. If I loose my main SAK, I go into SAK withdrawl. It's painful and causes mental anguish and lost sleep. :)

Any other knife that I might have a spare, for the most part they are not backups at all. They are just part of the accumulation. These are the ones I often choose to give as presents.

I dunno why we do...but this thread tells me: I am not alone.

When I first got into knives I came pretty close to getting a duplicate because I liked the knife so much. I came to realize that the initial excitement/infatuation with the knife is what causes me to want to get a "back up". After a while I see other knives I like even more and I'm glad I didn't spend money getting duplicates.

Maybe not appropriate to say so here, but most of my duplicates are lights....just a few knives;maybe 3....Browning A-Bolts....

I might get a duplicate now and then for a good value EDC knife. This is also because I tend to lose knives more often than I'd like to admit (or sometimes a friend may snag them).

I've got duplicates in fact I've got as many as 4 of the same model in 2 different knives. So I've got 4 knives each of just 2 models and lots of duplicates. I'll tell u why I do it. Im picky so when I find something I like that is well made I buy 2, 1 for me and 1 formmy son. When I find something I really like I'll buy four. Why??

Knives get discontinued, loss, theft, breakage, wearout, knife companies go under, economy collapses and all of the above goes down and I have no money for knives. They get banne by the govt etc.

It's 2011 and I've seen things in the last decade I thought I would never c in the us, he'll we have a knife fights orinization now, really. Attitudes perceptions behaviors norms and our govt and economy are changing so fast u can hardly keep up with it.

Given the state of the world we live in I view it to be foolish to do otherwise. Maybe not buy duplicates but not to
Have a lift
Emailing of knives for u and ur children amongst other items is
Just outright foolishness in this day and age

My duplicates are safe queens. I use one, keep the other NIB for its resale value if I ever fall on hard times. I'm not really worried about my users going to the point of failing (EDC ZT's mainly), but its heartbreaking when the beautiful DLC coating gets scratched up and marred.

The DLC on my ZT0350 was getting so bad that I starting looking for a replacement for it. Nothing is wrong with the knife, its just the DLC is so scratched up, but I talked myself out of it. I'm spending nearly all of my play money on knives, nothing else. It's bad. haha

There are so many knives out there I wouldn't buy duplicates, though I do admit to variations on certain themes/styles that appeal to me.

Because I epoxied the pocket clip of my ZT 350CB when I stripped the screw and bought another one instead of sending it in? And then after I bought the 2nd one, I sent the 1st one in. I sincerely thank Kershaw for not slapping me over the head for my stupidity.

Sometimes, getting duplicates is just to satisfy an innate desire to collect knives that are both aesthetically pleasing and functionally exceptional because of never wanting to lose that experience with that particular knife- should it's serviceable life be exhausted, it becomes lost, updated or no longer be in production. It's just an added bonus to know that one is in stock should a replacement be needed. However, since interests and reasons for doing something are constantly evolving, so will the desire to keep duplicates. I do keep such a disposition in check by having differences in models, such as steel type or handle finishes.

Haven't passed the barrier of more than two of the same exact model, but when those new ZT/Hinderer flippers come out, I'm going to blow pass that limit.

Because, they often discontinue a model, making them very hard or expensive to find and buy. So, if you have a few of something you really like, it puts you way ahead if that happens. Not only will you own more than one of what you like best, they will suddenly be worth maybe even more than you payed.

Right now I only have one duplicate, a para2 20CP. It's a backup just in case anything happens to the one in my pocket, than it would get thrown into full duty. Most of my knife purchases are models I don't already own, in steels I don't currently have.

No exact same model an configuration, but I have certain knives that I have many versions of. I have lots of different large Sebenzas, a bunch of Benchmade 940s, and about 4 Spyderco Delicas, none the exact same. I haven't bought 2 of the exact same knife except for some cheepo Chineese knives like the Sanrenmu 710 and I gave most of those away, I am tempted to buy multiples, however it just seems like obsessive behavior.

No duplicates here. The closest would be a Vic Spirit and a Spirit X. One is my EDC, the other stays in my work bag.
