Why do we buy duplicates?

Because we're sick, sick individuals.

I have duplicates of knives that I really like but which would be difficult to replace if they were lost.

Usually I don't, but I did get two Custom Highland Specials in CPM S35VN, from Bark River. Each one is slightly different, in handle and edge grind, and different handle colors. These were thicker and longer than normal, and I have not seen any for sale since. I'm glad I got two, cause I love EDC one of them, and knowing I have a second, to keep or sale later is cool by me.
I also got two Fiddleback Forge EDC's. One is 1/8" thick g-10 and the other is 5/32" in walnut crotch. The 5/32" is a regretable purchase, nice looking but too thick for that size knife. Live and learn.
I do have 2 Buck 110's, I inherited both in the same year. Otherwise, I would not have bought two of the same knives.

I buy duplicates if shopping for a user, one for my pocket and one for the collection.

I have also bought duplicates on some super-duper closeout knives, with the intent of using them for trade items later. Mixed results so far.

I haven't bought duplicates....but I have often planned to. Got a Sage 2 a couple years ago, I knew right away that I needed a backup in case anything happened to the original. See I like buying things that aren't sharp and pointy too. So for awhile it was a new maxpedition bag, flashlight, etc. Then as I was about to order my duplicate I realized that there were a couple other knives I needed worse. Right now I am ready to pull the trigger on another sage 2, but the upcoming chapparall and Techno have caught my eye. I think I'll hold out for one...or more likely both of those. If I like either of those better than the sage 2 I'll probably want a backup of that one, and start the cycle again.

Two is one, one is none.
Everything I really end up liking seems to get discontinued so I get spares.

The only duplicates I have are AFCKs. I currently have four and will buy more if I find one in the condition I want.

Yeah, when I find something(not necessarily knives) that I really really like they stop production and the item cannot be found. That is why I like to have a back-up. Adios!

Cause I have 2 hands....4 pockets.... 2 kids with 2 hands each and 4 pockets each.....then what if we all wear cargo pants.....just think of all the pockets and you would have to balance them all......
Symmetry......As defined : an imprecise sense of harmonious or aesthetically pleasing proportionality and balance;[1][2] such that it reflects beauty or perfection

Everything looks better pairs....beer....boobs.....knives....

I've bought duplicates with the justification that I'd abuse my first and have the second as reserve. I ended up not abusing my knives...I just couldn't, but that's just me. I think there are so many good knives out there...each new one better than the next. Steels and designs are getting better

Unless you really, know you will love a knife forever and/or have deep pockets, I'd say don't get a duplicate...but it's your money :).

Nothing to add...just like the way he thinks!

I guess having that 'backup' is important. Heck, I even did that with plastic model airplane and wooden model ship kits - then never built more than a few of them - I still have closet shelves stacked high with those kits. I even bought a 'backup' for my first S&W revolver, as it had 'sentimental value'! Then there was last year - when I bought a second new $900 S&W revolver - another 'backup'. It may reflect on my austere childhood. We moved a bunch once we left Brooklyn - several times via train - and I carried nothing from my childhood, save the 'good' memories. I am making up for that now - a veritable hoarder/packrat of the first order. I've seen the TV 'hoarder' shows... I must be just a packrat - I don't have stacks of used pizza delivery boxes and you can navagate through my home & shop without walking on 'stuff'.

The real problem seems to be the process of 'never being happy' with what I have - and the resultant 'quest' for the ultimate knife. I should listen to Sheryl Crow's songs more, perhaps - "It's not having what you want... it's wanting what you have!". Sometimes it's just the 'next' knife - or 'fix'. When nothing 'new' is fancied, it's duplicate buying time. The economy tanking will have an effect here. BTW, are pocket/fb knives a 'durable goods' item??

I have duplicates of the ones I carry the most because I tend to lose or break them. However, I always try to make the duplicate slightly different. For example, one of the knives I carry the most is a Spyderco Delica. The one I carry is the standard, saber ground, black FRN handle, plain edge Delica. My "duplicate" is a British Racing Green, combo edge in ZDP-189. I keep a Ladybug 3 on my keychain. It is an orange FRN handle, VG-10 blade. I have a duplicate in case I lose it (actually did lose it, but found it again recently), but the "duplicate" is the yellow Salt version with H1 steel. The knife I rotate out with the Delica is a Benchmade Mini Griptilian. I only have one of them, but I am thinking about getting a duplicate either in another color, or maybe the Doug Ritter version in the upgraded steel. At least by getting slight variations I don't feel like I'm wasting my money and not adding anything to my collection, but I still have a backup in case one of my favorites gets lost.

If I can afford a duplicate of a knife I really like, I'll buy one to keep pristine so I don't feel bad using the other one and getting it scratched and banged up from carry and use. I've sold most of the pristine ones though, out of necessity. One of my favorite knives that I carry is a 1974 Case 6332. It's rare-ish, vintage, and collectable, and I bought in unused condition, so I might feel guilty using it if I didn't buy another exactly like it (and a 1965-69 6332 as well). I'd also feel guilty carrying my BM940D2CF if I didn't have a 940Ti-01 kept in mint condition.

I don't really buy knives to collect anymore, only to carry and use. So when it's a rare/discontinued knife, I like having the "back-up", in case some day I lose or wear out the first one.

Because they was on clearance for 85 bucks each shipped! (and what are they going for these days? :D)

I've got duplicates of only a few knives -- and they were bought specifically after I bought the first, loved it and then my mind got overthinking "what if they discontinue it... what if the price goes up or they become too hard to find!?"

Duplicates of BM 940, XM18 and ZT0350s... Just want to make sure I've always got one...

Can't explain any better than that!

This doesn't apply just to knives. Every time I find something I like, they quit making it. So I buy extras. I have to say that many of the knives I have bought for back ups are doing much better than my stock portfolio
