Why Do We Collect Knives?

Why do people like us collect knives and not guns, I have two guns, a Mossberg P/A and a Daystate air-rifle, I am very happy with these guns and would see no point in changing them but when it comes to knives I can always justify getting another even before the other one has arrived, like now.

I have a Busse 7 in the post from USA, a Mad Dog waiting to be paid for but now I am in search of a Randall #14, can anyone answer this question, why does there always have to be another, even though every time one arrives I say "thats it"

Hunting? Don't be a wise guy, what do you hunt with a knife?

Name it!

My reason was because knives were less expensive to collect than guns, but it's not the case for me anymore being I'm now buying expensive knives. Also, knives can be used in everyday work. And last but not least, I have no use for guns, I don't hunt or kill for food ... I buy my food!

Well, up here in Canada most of the guns that I would like to collect are either prohibited or severely restricted. To own a handgun one must go through so much BS and red tape that is is not even worth it IMO. And even then, the only place one can legally carry the weapon is to or from a shooting range. Plus, I live in an urban center, do not drive, and do not hunt. I'd like to have at least a little .22 semiauto rifle and a nice 12-gauge pump, but they would just collect dust since there is no way I could get out to shoot them. Maybe I should get them anyway, to pack away for the time when my Government outlaws these type of firearms as well. (But they'd probably be Grandfathered heheh...)

Really though, knives are so much more fun to collect. I get enjoyment from simply sharpening my blades, test cutting materials, watching TV and fiddling with a nice folder, and so on. Try that with a Glock or SIG... heheh. I enjoy showing off my knives to friends that drop by, and they always expect my next piece to outdo the last. It's more or less legal for me to carry a folder when I'm out and about, so I've always got one even though on the average day I don't have occasion to cut anything. I just like 'em!

Why knives and not guns? Why do some collect stamps and not coins? Why do some collect paintings and eschew sculpture? It's just a matter of, as they say, "what trips your trigger."

BTW, I recently had a visitor from Japan. When I asked him what struck him most about America, he said it was how obsessive we are about guns. I assumed he was refering to all of the guns on TV, in he movie we'd seen, all of the recent debates about guns that have been so much in the news, etc. He said, "No, Americans talk about guns all the time." I thought about it, and he's right. We "shoot the breeze," we "aim for our target," we "shoot someone in the back," we "shoot back a reply," we "step up to the firing line", we "spend all of our ammo", etc., etc. So many little sayings that are unique to American culture and that come from guns.

Anyway,I have recently written a little essay on some of the reasons that I find myself interested in knives:

Chuck's Essay

Maybe this is way of looking at the matter that some of you hadn't considered.

The simple fact is, Boys need Toys!
And we believe that whoever dies with the most toys wins. Why knives not guns? Guns for me are too expensive, and too much of a hassle. Besides, I see a beauty of line and form in knives that I just don't see in guns.

I began collecting knives AND guns over 30 years ago. I bought my first knife (a Buck 110) to use when I went hunting. I stopped hunting almost 20 years ago but I still target shoot once or twice a week. I'm still collecting both guns and knives even though I carry the same two small knives with me almost every day and one of three concealed carry firearms (legal of course) depending on what I'm wearing and where I'm going. In my opinion, collecting anything should be a matter of what makes you feel good (and hopefully doesn't keep food off your table or clothes off your back.)

Until I'm 21, what's the point of buying a gun? I can't get a CCW, and open carry is at least a nuiscance, if not illegal (can you imagine what happens in Mass. if you walk down the street with a gun on your hip?). My father owns an assortment of rifles/shotguns, so I really don't need my own at the moment.

I guess the reasons have already been said but I will reitterate anyways.

First of all this facination came from childhood. I loved guns and knives but knives were more accesible to me. Fulfilling a childhood fantasy.

secondly, as it was said, knives are cheaper.

Right now I think, in a weird kind of way it makes my heart whole. I think they're beautiful.

Finally I find more use with knives than say gun, doesn't say I wont start collecting guns when I get a REAL job after colelge

I don't really see the connection between collecting the two, but then I am not a hunter.

BTW, loved your first two albums, but not the more recent stuff. The multi-media seems to cloud the music in concert as well...

Please, there may be a lady in this thread right now. I know several woman who collect knives rather than dolls. While it's true that there seems to be a bit of gender disparity in our hobby, let us not generalize and, in doing so, discourage or exclude any of the other sex who share our interests in fine cutlery.
