Why Do We Like Traditionals?

I don't think there's any replacement for a traditional pocket knife.

I've almost always carried a traditional along with my modern. Always have a traditional that is, usually an SAK, and usually have a modern folder as well.

In my opinion, a larger modern folder isn't a replacement for a traditional pocket knife, but for a traditional belt knife.

When I think about how I use my Spyderco Military, it's more in line with how I'd use a small to mid size fixed blade. I cut down boxes, cut straps, rope, etc. It's easily accessible and quickly deployed. All like a fixed blade in a sheath on your hip.

I never slice an apple with it. It sucks at whittling. I can't easily trim my nails with it and it doesn't remind me of my youth or of my grandfather. All of these traits and tasks belong to the slip joint found in my left front pocket. Whichever one it may be.
